Frances Sprunger

    Frances "Betty" Sprunger, 90, of Berne, died Wednesday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born to Fred and Mary Teeple Myers.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Marion (Alice) Krehbiel of Pretty Prairie, Kansas, and five sons: Judson, Jay, and Clifton Sprunger of Berne; Arnie Sprunger of St. Louis, Missouri; and Douglas Sprunger of Muncie.

Berne’s back to golf carts

    Despite one of the harshest winters in recent memory, spring nonetheless is in the air.
    That means that golf carts are coming out of winter storage. And accordingly, complaints about restrictions on the operation of those vehicles are beginning to find their way to public officials.
    Such is the case in Berne, where Mayor John Minch on Monday evening updated the city council on a "golf cart situation" which has resurfaced there.

Braves’ clutch tourney win first since 2004-05

    With the clutch Bellmont performance in overtime Tuesday the Bellmont Braves not only broke a 14-game skid in 2011, but the squad also snapped a five-game sectional slide, which started with a 56-47 loss to Concordia in the opening game of the 2006 sectional.

Sectional at South Adams on Friday

    The second round of the Class 2A sectional at the South Adams Stardome in Berne will be played on Friday, with four teams in action:
    •At 6 p.m., Adams Central (13-7) will play Bishop Luers (16-4).
    •After that game, Bluffton (14-6), which beat South Adams on Tuesday, will take on Woodlan (2-18).
    Friday's winners will play for the sectional title at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Little change as area waits for new rain

    Conditions were mostly on hold in Decatur and Adams County today as everyone waits to see what happens in the next 48 or so hours.
    "Not a lot has changed. Everything that was closed yesterday is still closed today," Decatur Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert said early this morning.

Decatur, Berne firefighters in latest rescues

    Two more water rescues were performed on Tuesday by Decatur and Berne firefighters, with the Decatur rescue occurring several miles inside Ohio.
    Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel said the local firefighters were called out just before 6 p.m. to a location along the Harrison-Willshire Rd., near Willshire, Ohio, after an elderly woman drove into deep water and her car was swept an estimated 100 yards off the road into a farm field.
    Marckel said the woman stayed in the car as the water reached up to the windows.

Esther Erxleben

    Esther Erxleben, 89, of Decatur, died at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born on August 6, 1921, in Adams County to Fred and Lizzie Meier Bulmahn.
    She married Lorenz Erxleben on May 2, 1943, in St. John Lutheran Church at Bingen; he passed away on August 17, 1986.

Lucille K. Sprunger

    Lucille K. Sprunger, 96, of Berne, died Tuesday at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born to Henry and Cassie Schindler Winteregg.
    Surviving are two daughters: Roxanne Leichty of Newport News, Virginia and Mrs. Ted (Lana) Schwartz of Berne; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Braves shock Maconaquah in OT; snap 14-game skid

    The streak is over!
    The Bellmont Braves dispatched a 14-game losing streak by the wayside Tuesday night in the opening round of the  class 3A sectional 22 boys basketball tournament at the Teepee by outlasting Maconaquah, a team that entered the tourney with a 14-6 record, by a 59-57 count in overtime.

Tigers’ delay strategy closes door on Stars 50-31

        BERNE — Bluffton built a 10-point lead over South Adams going into the fourth quarter of their Sectional 38 opener Tuesday, then Tigers' coach Kevin Leising pulled the plug as his squad successfully kept the ball away from the SA defenders in an eventual 50-31 victory at the Stardome.
    The win puts the 14-6 Tigers in the 7:30 p.m. semi-final game against 2-18 Woodlan Friday night. Adams Central, 13-7, will take on state 2A power Bishop Luers, 16-4, in the 6 p.m. semi-final.
