Mirena E. Kopacz

April 12, 2011

    Mirena E. Kopacz, 92, of Decatur, passed away at 5:50 a.m. on Monday, April 11, 2011, at The Village of Heritage nursing home in Monroeville.
    She was born on August 29, 1918, in Pisa, Italy, to Quadrio and Edwiga Moggia.
    She married Joseph J. Kopacz on April 19, 1951; he passed away on September 4, 1994.

Eli S. Sprunger

    Eli S. Sprunger, 92, a resident of Berne, passed away at 9:45 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2011, in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    Eli was born on April 22, 1918, in Adams County, the son of Emil and Matilda (Hirschy) Sprunger.
    He married Audrey Crosby and she preceded him in death. He then married Clara Steury Matchett and she preceded him in death in 2010.

Jets hammer Squaws in season opener

    MONROE—Sydnee Peterson pitched a strong game for Adams Central Monday night and helped the Jets fashion a 13-1 whipping of the Bellmont Squaws at the AC diamond in their opening game of the season.
    Bellmont is now 1-1 after having beaten Bluffton in their opener last week.
    Bellmont had no answer for the hard-throwing Peterson as the AC hurler allowed just one walk and scattered seven hits and the Jets convincingly won the game due to the 10-run rule in five innings.

Proposal puts county in Stutzman district

    Adams County would shift from the 6th Congressional District to the 3rd CD under a proposed redistricting map unveiled Monday by Indiana statehouse Republicans.
    Under the current congressional roster, the county would move from being represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by Republican Mike Pence to the district now served by first-term GOP Congressman Marlin Stutzman.

State of the Schools outline given by Sirk

      Giving the annual State of the Schools address on Monday to a lunchtime gathering of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, North Adams Community Schools Superintendent Wylie Sirk quoted famous television news anchor and author Tom Brokaw about the importance of education.

Hurdles placer

Adams Central’s Shawn Reinhard clears one of the hurdles during last week’s opening track meet at AC between the Jets and Eastbrook. Reinhard posted a finish of :17.4 in the 110 high hurdles and finished second, being nosed out by a tenth of a second at the finish line. High hits 84 in Decatur

    It sure was fun while it lasted.
    Decatur-area residents enjoyed a preview of what's ahead part of Saturday and all of Sunday as spring weather was sprung across the area. Walkers were everywhere, as were motorcycles and bicycles, and a few air conditioners were cranked up.
    A high of 84 degrees was recorded at the Decatur weather station Sunday, a day awash in sunshine.

Northwest students will visit Speedway

    Northwest Elementary School in Decatur will take part this year in the eighth annual Indianapolis 500 Education Program Study (EPS) trips.
    Local fourth graders will be part of 10 trips to the 500 Indianapolis Motor Speedway next Tuesday. Fourth graders are chosen because it is in that grade that students are taught Indiana history.
    This year, 321 schools across Indiana are taking part in the trips, with almost 24,000 students involved.

    Larry W. Davis, Sr., 66, Decatur, died Sunday evening in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at the Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.
