Squaws run the table on Lady Tigers

    BLUFFTON— After the exciting battle over the weekend against Muncie Burris at the Warsaw Invitational, traveling to Bluffton to play a struggling Lady Tigers squad seemed like a breeze to the surging Squaws from Bellmont as they would go on to defeat Bluffton in three games, 25-2, 25-6, 25-12.

AC netters defeat Norwell

    MONROE—Alyssa Keller recorded a double-double with 13 digs and 22 assists Monday night to help pace the Adams Central varsity volleyball team to a three-game sweep of Norwell.
    The Jets won the even 25-14, 25-22, 25-18 to improve to 9-7 on the season. AC also won the reserve match by a 25-18, 25-16 count and now own a strong 16-5 slate for play this year.

White trial under way

    The trial of Tyler White of Bluffton on a charge of murdering his estranged wife, Amy, a former Berne resident, has begun with jury selection in Wells Circuit Court at Bluffton and may last two weeks, according to reportrs.
    White, 29, allegedly shot his wife on October 27, 2009 in Wells County, while she was pregnant. Police say he has confessed to the shooting, which occurred during an argument as the two met to exchange custody of their son, 16 months old at the time.

New jobs for Berne

    A dozen new jobs are coming to Berne with the announcement Monday night that a metal fabrication firm is expanding into that city.
    In an unusual twist for a landlocked community, the new jobs will involve the construction of barges to be used on some of the country's largest waterways.

Homecoming Week at Bellmont

    It's Homecoming Week at Bellmont High School.
    Activities were kicked off Sunday as the school held its annual mud volleyball tournament on a wet and muddy day. The team that emerged as champion was comprised of sophomore Olivia Fuelling, senior Nathan Kortenber, junior Devon Schultz, senior Kyle Smith, senior Natalie McConnell, and senior Payton Selking.
    Powder puff football will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Bob Worthman Stadium.

BHS students creating e-books to help youngsters in Uganda

    Children growing up in the war-torn African nation of Uganda often face a perilous existence. Throughout 20 years of civil war, during which time thousands of Ugandan children as young as eight years old were abducted by rebel factions and forced either into military service or sexual servitude, the outlook for a peaceful and prosperous life was bleak.

    Jerry Nussbaum, 67, of Berne, who was shot 10 days ago by an Indiana state police trooper in a standoff in downtown Decatur, remains in critical condition at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne as of Saturday, according to a state police report.

Two fires fought near each other in the Berne area

    Decatur firefighters were called out on Saturday to assist at a farm silo fire in southern Adams County and were sent this morning to a small blaze at the Bunge North America complex in the city.
    The Saturday fire, which was first dispatched to the Berne Fire Department, occurred at the Kent Werst farm, 2570 W. County Rd. 750 South. The Decatur department sent its aerial platform truck, which can be extended to more than 100 feet and was used to reach the top of the silo.

DeWayne L. Beer

    DeWayne L. Beer, 74, of rural Berne, a former superintendent of the Adams County Highway Department, passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on June 22, 1937, in Adams County. His parents were the late Marcella Beer Meshberger and his stepfather, the late Chris Meshberger.
    He married Alice Stauffer on July 4, 1957, in Berne; she survives.

Kenneth P. Birch

    Kenneth P. Birch, 82, of Decatur, died at home on Sunday.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.
