Joseph E. Adams

June 20, 2011

    Joseph E. Adams was born on March 19, 1932, in Decatur and died on June 12, 2011, in Rochester, Minnesota.
    He was the loving husband of 57 years to Janet S. Adams, who passed in March.
    He was also the devoted father of Kathleen L. (Scott) Wickman and the dear grandfather of Lauren, Brennan, and Sean.

Summer due to arrive Tuesday

    Decatur has already had a couple of days which were hotter than any recorded in 2010, but it will be Tuesday when summer officially arrives, at 1:16 p.m. here.
    The arrival is labeled the Summer Solstice, which results in the longest day and the shortest night of the yeaar.
    Sol plus stice derives from a combination of Latin words meaning "sun" + "to stand still." As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky.

Jobless rate in upward tick

    Figures released Friday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development showed that unemployment crept up slightly in Adams County during May. The state report set the local jobless rate at 7.8 percent for last month, up slightly from the county's 7.6 unemployment rate in April but still below the 8.2 percent figure for March.
    April's unemployment rate was the lowest seen in the county in almost three years.

AC’s project on target for a fall finish

    Adams Central School's $10 million construction and renovation project is on target to be done this fall and the school board has scheduled a dedication ceremony for Sunday, November 13, at 2:30 p.m.
    At the board's June meeting, the latest payment to the prime contractor, Weigand Construction of Fort Wayne, was approved at $1,083,047.24, covering the costs of steel and concrete for work on the southeast corner of the building.

    Students at Northwest Elementary School and Bellmont Middle School were soaking up the college atmosphere as the current school year concluded, and will continue to do so.

Hoagland Days is underway

    Hoagland Days schedule:
Friday
    Merchants' tent open during fair hours.
    5-11 p.m.—Food court open.
    5-8 p.m.—Fish and tenderloin meals in the park pavilion.
    6 p.m.—Bingo in the bingo tent.
    6 p.m.—Rides on the midway.
    6 p.m.—Crowning the prince and princess in the entertainment tent.

ICGSA names Harvey All-State

    The Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association has named Alexis Harvey a second team All-State track competitor, it was noted today by Bellmont coach Carl Risch.
    Apparently, the association named 40 girls first team all-state and almost that many to the second team. Harvey, a sophomore, placed fourth in the 200 meter run at the IHSAA State Girls Track Meet recently, setting a BHS record with a 24.83.

Kintz clinches top Mays spot

    The Kintz Insurance Krushers broke open a tight 3-2 game in the Willie Mays League of the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance with five runs in the bottom of the third Thursday night and ended up capturing a 13-4 win over Hull Lift.
    With the victory, Kintz won the HEBA Mays league title and with its 10-2 slate will be the number one seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Tractor touches slated Saturday

    The parks & recreation department will be holding another Touch a Tractor event this Saturday, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m. on the Riverside Center parking lot.
    The event is, of course, open to the public and no admission is charged.
    Visitors will be able to touch, climb on or see up close many of the tractors and unique vehicles on display.
    Free coffee will be provided by the department, while free juice and donuts will be provided by North Adams Schools.
