Lynn D. Fuhrmann

    Lynn Dale Fuhrmann, 51, of rural Decatur, died at 10:35 p.m. Wednesday in Parkview Hospital at Fort Wayne as a result of congestive heart failure, which had affected him for many years.
    He was born on February 17, 1960, in Decatur to Paul and Adelinda M. Buuck Fuhrmann. His father passed away on March 22, 2010, and his mother passed away on October 1, 1979.
    He was a lifelong Adams County farmer and a former employee of North American Van Lines (SIRVA) as a truck mechanic.

Softball tryouts on Sunday

    Girls age 10 and over as of January 1, 2012, who are interested in playing on a travel softball team next summer should plan on attending a tryout session Sunday, September 11 at the Bellmont High School field from 5-6 p.m.
    In case of inclement weather, the tryout will be held in the Bellmont High School auxiliary gym.

$3,747 raised for cancer fight

    The ladies of Decatur Golf Association recently held their annual Susan G. Komen Rally for the Cure Tournament.
    Seventy women golfed and 76 sponsors participated,
    A record-breaking $3,747 was raised to fight breast cancer, the association announced.
    The rally committee — Carol Hackman, Ann Bixler, Janeen Lanham and Vanessa Feasel — issued thanks and appreciation to golfers and sponsors for turning Cross Creek "pink" for a day.

Hearty start opens United Way’s drive

    "Matters of the heart" is how this year's United Way of Adams County (UWAC) campaign chairwoman, Leslie Rhoades of Decatur, describes the 2011 drive toward a goal of $222,012.
    At Wednesday's UWAC kickoff luncheon in downtown Berne, she also referred to the United Way campaign slogan, "When your gift becomes someone's lifeline," and used a simple demonstration to show how even a small amount of money can make a big difference.

Mediacom: No refunds for not having WANE-TV

    A letter which appeared in the People's Voice section of Tuesday's Daily Democrat, in which the writer alleged that Mediacom cable television is offering refunds of 89-cents for each day that WANE-TV is off the air, apparently was based more on wishful thinking than in fact.
    The letter to this newspaper stated that customers could call their customer service department to receive the credit.

Heritage Festival set Saturday

    The annual Berne Heritage Festival will be held at Swiss Heritage Village and Museum in that city this Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    Numerous activities are scheduled, including children's games, "old-timers activities," wool-spinning, butter-churning, corn-shelling by a hand-cranked device, living history demonstrations, pioneer activities, sawmill demonstrations, an 1840s-style trading camp, and a Civil War camp.

    Elnora L. Bebout, 86, of Decatur, died on Wednesday in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

    So great was the enthusiasm for the event and so well-developed the sales ideas, the committee in charge of Decatur's 175th Anniversary Celebration turned a nice-sized profit, it was learned at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

City to play wait game on key grant

    Having taken the latest step in seeking a grant to rid the city of a hazardous eyesore, Decatur officials are now mostly relegated to a waiting game, hoping to hear good news before the end of the year.
    Prior to Tuesday night's city council meeting, the second of two required public hearings was held on the city's bid for a $456,850 grant to take down and clean up the ancient former street department — and onetime city light — building located just west of the city police headquarters.

Moment of silence opens Geneva council’s meeting

    Prior to conducting regular business, everyone present at the Geneva Town Council meeting on Tuesday sat in silence for a moment to honor and remember Rosie Puterbaugh. Puterbaugh served as the town's deputy clerk-treasurer for many years until her death from heart surgery complications last Friday.
