Expelled student charged in school shooting

    MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — A 15-year-old boy who was expelled this week opened fire at his central Indiana middle school before classes began Friday, shooting another teen student in the stomach, police said. The incident sparked an hours-long school lockdown as hundreds of panicked parents awaited word on their children.

Baumer is 'Prep Player of the Year'

    The numbers don't lie!
    Adams Central junior Maverick Baumer, a 6-5 junior forward, compiled some impressive statistics this past season as he helped to lead the Jets to their best record in almost 30 years, a 13-8 ledger.
    For his efforts, the Daily Democrat sports staff is naming Baumer the Adams County Boys Prep Player of the Year.

Top scores in the 'DDD March Challenge'

    With all the brackets scored for the opening three rounds leading up to Thursday's regional semi-final battles, some other "DDD March Challenge" contestants deserve mention.
    One of the top scores for the first three rounds belonged to Rob Knefelkamp, who totaled 61 points. Unfortunately, Rob liked Duke to take it all, so he's out. Kevin Ripley and David Miller (of Monroe) totaled 57 points, and picked Duke.

Leona M. Amburgey

    Leona M. Amburgey, 81, formerly of Willshire, Ohio, died Thursday in Colonial Nursing Center at Rockford, Ohio.
    She was born to Roy and Goldie Bollenbacher Luginbill.
    Among survivors are two daughters, Rita Amburgey and Mrs. Randy (Nina) Habegger of Willshire.

Patricia A. Gerber

    Patricia Ann Gerber, 81, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at her home in Fort Wayne following an extended illness.
    She was born in Decatur and was a former resident of Ossian and Cedarville, Michigan.
    She was a member of Woodburn Missionary Church.

    Katie S. Schwartz, one day old, of rural Berne, died Thursday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    She was born on Wednesday in Decatur to Samuel J. and Mandy J.E. Girod Schwartz of rural Berne.
    The family belongs to the Old Order Amish.

Chamber program to aid local businesses

    The Decatur Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with Mind's Eye Graphics of Decatur and Armanda Designs, has announced that it will present a series of events called First Tuesday to help local businesses make the most out of their assets.
    The initial First Tuesday event will be held on April 5 at 8 a.m. in Mind's Eye Graphics, 1019 Commerce Dr., at the far western end of an addition to Industrial Park.
    Officials said space is limited to 15 people.

BMS March Athletes

    As is a monthly custom, the Decatur Rotary Club hosted three Bellmont Middle School athletes for a dinner on March 17 at the Back 40 Junction.
    Swimmers Connor Ross and Reagan Burry and wrestler Quinton Ganaway were treated to a meal and given certificates for being named March Athletes of the Month by the Decatur Rotary Club.
    Rotary Club member Penny Parrish presented the three students with certificates.

Fuelling tabbed Marquette, Butler

    Jim Fuelling picked both Butler and Marquette to be in the Sweet 16, the only such picker so far (more sheets to be checked) in the Decatur Daily Democrat March Challenge NCAA picking contest. He scored 54 points in picking Ohio State.
    Josh Fisher and Chester Smith totaled 57 points and both took Kansas. Samantha Macklin did well early and earned 57 points ... but had Texas as the champ.
    Yvonne Raudenbush, a longtime Duke fan, has 54 points and her Blue Devils, and Moss Whitright as the same number and Duke.

Grace E. Heemstra

    Grace E. Heemstra, 91, Berne, died Wednesday in Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    She was born to Ira C. and Nina Burgess Hinkle.
    Surviving are a stepson, Ted Heemstra of Fort Wayne, and a stepdaughter, Nancy Yeager of Cincinnati, Ohio.
    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Swiss Village, with graveside services at 2 p.m. in Maplewood Cemetery at Reading, Michigan. Visitation is 9-10 a.m. Friday in the Swiss Village chapel.
