Geraldine M. Buuck

Geraldine M. Buuck, 86, of Hoagland, died at 12:55 p.m. Thursday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    She was born on June 1, 1924, in Wells County to Martin C. and Paula Ostermeyer Gallmeyer.
    She married Robert H. Buuck on September 22, 1945; he passed away on May 9, 2002.
    She was a homemaker and also worked at Indiana Auto Auction. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church at Bingen and the Hoagland-Area Advancement Association.

James D. Briggs Jr.
    James Day Briggs Jr., 89, of Geneva, chairman emeritus of the board of directors of Bank of Geneva, passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur, Indiana.
    He was born in Geneva, Indiana, on July 3, 1921, to James D. and Mary E. Hoskinson Briggs.

Pauline E. Hilyard

    Pauline E. Hilyard, 94, a longtime Decatur resident, died on Thursday in The Village of Heritage nursing home at Monroeville.
    She was born in Adams County on September 22, 1916 to Earl B. and Rhuey J. Hakes Hilyard.
    Surviving are one niece, Phyllis Colley of Monroe, Michigan, and four nephews: Max Hilyard of Angola, Indiana; Leonard P. Hilyard of Chicago; Terry E. Hilyard of Brownsburg, Indiana; and Richard Hilyard of Salt Lake City.

Braves Bash Archers

    The hot-hitting Bellmont Braves continued to see pitches they like served up at home plate as they counted five extra base hit, including two homers, among the 15 hits they racked up in a 14-7 triumph over South Side Thursday.
    Brandon Voglewede gave the Bellmonters a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer. Landon Baker also connected for a round-tripper for the Braves as did Joyner of South Side. The Archers' Florek tripled while getting doubles for the Braves were Will Busse, Joe Baker, and Brian Fullenkamp.

Squaws tie, break track standards; finish second

    VAN WERT — One school record that lasted all of two days fell by the wayside while another one was tied in Thursday night's triangular girls track meet between Bellmont, Van Wert and Celina.
    The Squaws finished second in the meet with 46.5 points while Celina easily won with 92.5. The host team was third at 36.

AC is again debating a later start

    Should the school day start at 8:30 a.m. instead of 8?
    That question is being considered again by the Adams Central school board, which has weekly teacher professional development sessions on Wednesdays that push that day's class starts back to 8:30.

Geneva honors own with annual awards

    They came, they met, they celebrated.
    That was Thursday evening's annual meeting of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce, at which five awards were presented. More than 40 people attended.
    A lengthy moment of silence was observed for influential banker and civic linchpin James D. Briggs Jr. who died, at age 89, in Adams Memorial Hospital a short time before the meeting.

    Mattie Wickey, 97, of rural Berne, died Wednesday at home.
    Among survivors are a son, David N. Wickey of rural Berne, and five daughters,Mrs. Joe (Maryann L.) Hilty of rural Monroe; Mrs. Mose E. (Christine) Schmidt of rural Salem; Josephine Schwartz of rural Milroy, Indiana; and Mrs. Jake B. (Mattie) Schwartz and Mrs. Jonas (Mandy) Schwartz of rural Berne.
    Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Jonas Schwartz home, 2828 W. County Rd. 500 South, with burial in Schwartz Cemetery, rural Monroe.

Marian L. Zuercher

    Marian Lucille (Sprunger) Zuercher, 88, a resident of Berne, passed away at 5:30 p.m. on April 12, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur.
    She was born on April 12, 1923, in Woodburn, Indiana, the youngest child of Alvin and Sylvia (Lochner) Sprunger. At three years of age she was orphaned and was subsequently reared by Hiram and Rufina (Liechty) Sprunger of Berne, cousins of her father. 
    On April 8, 1944, she married Christian Walter Zuercher, who preceded her in death on April 7, 2001.

Bellmont plays long ball in 13-2 rout of Knights

    FORT WAYNE—Bellmont assaulted Bishop Luers pitching for 14 hits including a pair of home runs Wednesday night and fashioned a 13-2 victory over the Knights at the Indiana Tech field in varsity baseball.
    Matt Stidam and D. J. Wilder cleared the fence with home runs
for the Braves while Landon Baker kept his hot hitting going with a three-for-four performance including a double and five RBIs after getting three hits and six RBIs on Tuesday. Will Busse and Gunnar Cale both tripled while Brian Hakes cashed in a two-bagger.
