Officials say river algae is no threat

    What's that stuff in the St. Marys River?
    According to Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel, who led the local investigation on Friday into a brownish-looking discoloration in the water at Pleasant Mills, the material is only algae that built up in area streams and ditches due to stagnation during a long dry spell, then got washed into the river by recent rain that fell in Ohio.

Pike changes plans for Schafer Building

    Remember the project announced some four years ago to convert the former Schafer Building, at First and Madison Sts. in downtown Decatur, into a complex of 26 condominiums?
    Now, the owner of that structure, Robert J. Pike of New Richmond, Wisconsin, says he still plans to create the condos, but instead of offering them to the public at-large, he plans to let United States military veterans live there.

G.M. Alspaugh

    G.M. Alspaugh, 85, of Celina, Ohio, died on July 19 in Celina Manor Nursing Home.
    He was born to Arnold and Ruah Clouse Alspaugh.
    Among survivors are four sons, Albert Alspaugh of Rockford, Ohio; Terry Alspaugh of Decatur; Mark Alspaugh of Celina; and Todd Alspaugh of Greenville, Ohio, and two sisters, including Joy Steele of Decatur.
    A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, in the Village Community Center at Shane's Park in Rockford.

Julia W. Banta

    Julia W. Banta, 89, of Geneva, died Sunday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva.

Mary E. Fiechter

August 1, 2011

    Mary E. Fiechter, 76, of rural Berne, died on Saturday at home.
    She was born to Theo and Naoma Speheger Beer.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Kris (Ann) Frauhiger of Montpelier and four sons: Don and Lynn Fiechter of Keystone; Rick Fiechter of Montpelier; and Jim Fiechter of Bluffton.

Howard E. Hess

August 1, 2011

    Howard E. Hess, 69, of Willshire, Ohio, died at 12:43 p.m. Saturday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne following an accident at his residence on Friday.
    He was born to Robert E. and Ida L. McClish Hess.
    He married Judith C. Miller and she survives.

Paul S. Liechty

August 1, 2011

    Paul S. Liechty, 93, of Berne, passed away on July 22 at Swiss Village Retirement Community.
    He was born on November 17, 1917, in Adams County to Albert W. and Ida Moser Liechty.
    Paul taught for four years in Union City, Indiana, and for 30 years in elementary schools at Decatur. He graduated from Goshen College in Indiana with a bachelor's degree in education and received a master's degree in education and a specialist degree in education from Ball State University at Muncie.

Audra E. Miller

    Audra E. Miller, 88, of Decatur, widow of Rev. Fuhrman Miller, died today in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Haggard, Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home, Decatur.

S. Sue Snyder

August 1, 2011

    S. Sue Snyder, 74, of Berne, died Friday in Lutheran Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    She was born to Ivan and Maude Montgomery.
    Among survivors are a daughter, Kendra Bauman of Berne, and a son, Clay Snyder of Berne.
    Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today in Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva, with private burial at Gravel Hill Cemetery, rural Bryant. Visiting hours are 1-3 p.m. today.

Practices set to begin

    Paperwork must be turned into coaches or to the athletic departments before varsity athletes will be able to participate in fall practices, it was noted by area athletic directors. Golf practices begin today while most of the rest of the fall sports will begin with officials practices on Monday, Aug. 1.
    Bellmont Athletic Director Dale Manis that the following items are necessary: IHSAA approved physical exam form, medical consent card, BHS Athletic Code of Conduct sheets, and Legal Reporting Waiver form.
