    Berniece F. McBride, 91, of Decatur, died on Tuesday in the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur.

Anti-drug council is given new grant

    A $125,000 federal grant has been awarded to the Substance Abuse Awareness Council (SAAC) in Adams County by the Office of National Drug Control Policy as part of the local group's continuing involvement with and support from the U.S. Drug-Free Communities (DFC) program.

Bearcreek will host special display

     Starting Friday and running through September 2-11, a free event called Midwest America Healing Field will be set up on the grounds of Bearcreek Farms in northern Jay County to remember the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and to pay tribute to all U.S. military and emergency services personnel and first responders, living and deceased.

‘Survivor’ all-star ponders governor bid

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — ‘‘Survivor’’ all-star contestant Rupert Boneham may run for governor of Indiana.
    Boneham formed an exploratory committee Monday to possibly seek the Libertarian Party’s nomination for governor.
    He said on his campaign website that the current field of candidates doesn’t understand the problems average Hoosiers face. He cited his extensive charity work on behalf of troubled teenagers as his chief qualification.

Hopkins recovering after heart attack

    Veteran Daily Democrat sports editor Jim Hopkins is a patient at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after suffering a heart attack Monday afternoon.
    Hopkins underwent a cardiac catheterization on Tuesday morning and results showed some damage to his heart but doctors are optimistic about his recovery. He said he was feeling much better and he was hoping to be discharged from the hospital today or Friday at the latest.

BCI Remodeling nabs city golf championship

    BCI Remodeling won the league championship of the Cross Creek Men’s Golf Association Sunday taking out Hi-Way Service with a gross score of 320-361 and after the handicap was figured in BCI held a  289-307 advantage.

Leonard R. Jaurigue

    Leonard (Lennie) R. Jaurigue, 60, of Fort Wayne, passed away on August 28, 2011.
    He was born February 25, 1951 in Decatur. He was the son of Robert and Bernice Jaurigue of Decatur.
    He was employed for 25 years at the Fort Wayne Foundry, enjoyed cooking and was an avid Notre Dame fan. Most important was spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.

Delbert D. Sprunger

    Delbert D. Sprunger, 83, of Decatur, a longtime civic leader in Berne, passed away on Saturday, August 27, in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on September 1, 1927, in Adams County to Clarence and Lorine Habegger Sprunger.
    He married Ida Irene Zuercher on September 22, 1946; she preceded him in death on April 11, 2009.
    Delbert and his wife owned the Musik Haus in Berne for 30 years and he was widely known in a 50-mile area as piano-tuning technician.

Audley David Turner

    Audley David Turner, 68, a longtime resident of Willshire, Ohio, died at 1:58 p.m. Monday in Community Health Center at Coldwater, Michigan.
    Dave had been a member of several American Legion posts in the area.

Squaws stop Knights

    A tight defensive battle was broken by a great offensive play by the Bellmont in the second half and the Squaws captured a 1-0 win over Norwell in Northeast Hoosier Conference girls soccer to remain unbeaten on the season.
    The 5-0 Squaws had a decided ball possession edge in the first half but Norwell's defense focused on keeping the offensive combination of Taylor Kennedy, Sarah Gerke, and Madison Gephart quiet by keeping five players back and most of the time were double teaming the BHS forwards.
