Residents of Decatur and Adams County were struggling to return to some form of normal today after being battered by the toughest winter blow this season.
Well over 10 inches of snow was on the ground — and huge piles stacked here and there in Decatur by cleanup crews — as the county now has to deal with bitter cold.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Utility crews were braving frigid temperatures today as they work to restore power to thousands of Indiana homes and business following this week’s big winter storm have reduced the number of outages statewide to about 20,000.
Indiana homeland security department spokeswoman Emily Norcoss said Thursday morning that nearly all of the outages in central and southern Indiana are in Duke Energy’s service district, and the rest are rural electric cooperative customers.
Patricia L. Mansfield, 78, of Decatur, passed away at 10:38 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the nursing center of Swiss Village Retirement Community at Berne.
Pat was born in Decatur on July 14, 1932, to Andrew B. and Alice (Kriegel) Appelman.
She married William H. Mansfield on January 6, 1953.
Pat was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur and its Rosary Society.
Kayden Andrew Miller of Fort Wayne was stillborn at 9:35 p.m. Monday in Dupont Hospital at Fort Wayne.
He was born to Mark A. and Deidre A. Keller Miller of Fort Wayne.
Harold D. Smith, 79, formerly of Geneva, died Wednesday in Swiss Village Retirement Community at Berne.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Downing and Glancy Funeral Home, Geneva.
Barbara J. Thomas, 79, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2011, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center in Decatur.
She was born on March 18, 1931, in Barren County, Kentucky, to Sanford and Ethel (Mansfield) Gravens.
She married George R. Thomas on October 16, 1948; he passed away on September 21, 1984.

The Adams County Spelling Bee at St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium.
A spokesman for the Indiana State Patrol said at 8:30 a.m. today that a Level 1 emergency exists in "most of the 11-county Fort Wayne district" which includes Adams County.
A Level 1 emergency means that travel is restricted to emergency personnel only, the spokesman said.
Moderate snow continued to fall throughout the district. Interstate 69 and I-469 were said to be slick and snow-covered, although passable. State and county roads are snow-covered and in some cases impassable, the patrol said.
