Fredrick H. "Fritz" Liechty, 84, Goshen, a former Berne native and businessman, passed away Thursday morning at Greencroft Gables, Goshen.
He was the son of Hiram and Fanny(Beitler) Liechty, born on January 8, 1928, in Berne.
He married Magdalene "Maggie" (Lehman) on August 26, 1950.
A special party was held at Evergreen Court on January 6 in honor of Ralph Kenworthy, who celebrated his 106 birthday with family and friends.
Born in Camden, Ohio, on January 6, 1906, Ralph has been a fixture in Decatur for most of his life. Up until a few years ago, Ralph was still living in his own apartment and could be seen driving through town on his way to a variety of restaurants for a bite to eat, or perhaps to a local bar to play pool against the "younger boys," referring to his friends.
The Purduettes and the Purdue Varsity Glee Club will perform in Erekson Theater at Bellmont High School on Sunday, March 4, starting at 3 p.m.
Also performing will be the Purdue Flappers, Cowgirls and Ba-Na-Na.
In addition, the Bellmont High School show choir will perform in a joint musical number with both of the Purdue ensembles.
Republican Kim Fruechte has announced his candidacy and filing for re-election as District One Adams County Commissioner.
Fruechte has held the position the past four years and expressed in his announcement that it has been a rewarding experience serving Adams County and that he has the knowledge and desire to continue serving the community.
KENDALLVILLE — "I knew sooner or later I was going to get him. It's hard to beat another good guy four times in a row," stated an exuberant Ben Baker after the BHS senior took down Carroll's Spencer Raypole with three seconds left in the match, winning the 195-pound NHC title with the 3-1 victory Saturday at East Noble.
MONROE — Adams Central earned four titles and placed 13 of 14 wrestlers to dominate the ACAC Wrestling Tourney Saturday, piling up 230.5 points to the 189.5 of second-place South Adams.
The win gives the Jets both portions of the ACAC mat crown for the first time in seven years, and it was the first time for the wrestling double by fifth-year head coach Doug Schultz.
"Our kids wrestled up to their ability, about as well as they possibly could," stated Schultz.
FORT WAYNE— The Homestead Spartans had an off-night shooting the basketball against the Bellmont Braves, but because of 27 miscues, John Baker's tribe lost the game in what ended up as a laugher during their Saturday night NHC meeting that saw the final score, 71-39.
The Braves shot a decent 40% from the field but only took 35 shots compared to Homestead's 62 shots hoisted. There was a big discrepancy in free throw shooting as well with the Spartans hitting 17-23 for the game and Bellmont making only five of eight.
Waneta A. Franz, 87, of Decatur, passed away at 3:30 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012, in the Woodcrest Nursing Center located in Decatur.
Waneta was born on Tuesday, April 29, 1924, in Adams County to the late Martin and Frieda (Bauermeister) Conrad. She married the late Richard C. Franz on March 13, 1943, in Decatur. He passed away on September 23, 1998.
Adams Central Athletic Director Rick Minnich noted Friday morning that the Allen County Athletic Conference Wrestling Tournament, slated for Adams Central on Saturday, has been delayed two hours and will begin at 11 a.m. because of the impending snow storm.â€¨ That will set the finals back to about 4:15 p.m.â€¨ Bellmont Athletic Director Dale Manis noted that the Northeast Hoosier Conference Wrestling Tournament, scheduled for Kendallville on Saturday at 9 am., has been delayed until 11 a.m.
The Bellmont boys and girls swim team both recorded eight individual and three relay triumphs Thursday night enroute to posting solid wins over the Adams Central Jets at the BHS pool.
In a meet before an SRO crowd, Bellmont claimed all but one event in both matches with the boys racing to a 123-63 decision while the Squaws earned a 103-60 decision.
