IPFW prof entertains at AC

    Although he didn't look like a college professor during much of his appearance at Adams Central on Tuesday, Dr. Lowell Madden of the Indiana-Purdue campus in Fort Wayne was right in his element as a magician and a proponent of using famous books by Dr. Seuss to enlighten children.
    He performed for more than 80 second graders at AC's elementary school.
    Before he put on the Cat in the Hat outfit, the professor performed a magic trick involving an egg in a glass on someone's head.

Shop is lost to fire

    In the midst of snow and chilly conditions, Decatur firefighters spent some four hours on Tuesday battling a fire at Woodpecker & Son, a large workshop located three or four miles north of Decatur.
    The building was destroyed by the blaze.
    The woodshop is owned by John Yoquelet and is located at 10063 N. County Road 100 West.
    A fire department spokesman this morning estimated the building to have been 30 by 60 feet.

Walter H. Biedermann

    Walter H. Biedermann, 80, of Palm Coast, Florida, formerly of Decatur, died on November 12, 2011, at his residence.
    Walter was born in Mannheim, Germany on August 22, 1931, to Heinrich and Hermine Konig Biedermann.
    He married Helen Joan Johnson, who survives.
    Walter lived in Decatur for 43 years and lived in Florida the past 10 years.
    Walter attended St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur and was a member of the Lutheran Church in Mannheim.

‘Heavy’ weight shift will likely translate into a heap of forfeits

    How's the new weight class switch, adding a heavier weight class for 2011-12 while taking out a middle class, working out after just one week of wrestling?
    Well, in Saturday's Super Dual at Yorktown, Bellmont senior Isaac Birch, in the new 220-pound class, received three forfeits. South Adams went 5-0 at Homestead, but had to forfeit the 195-pound class in every meet. There were other forfeits at both sites in various meets at 182 and heavyweight.

Stars roll Daleville, 66-54

    BERNE— The Starfire boys took on the Daleville Broncos at the Stardome for a non-conference match-up on the court Saturday night and came away with a 66-54 victory to improve to 2-0 on the year.
    The game featured the return of last year's leading scorer Dustin Wanner who picked up right where he left off against the Broncos after missing the Union City game with an ankle injury.

Jailer put on unpaid leave

    The three Adams County Commissioners approved on Monday a six-page "findings of fact and conclusions of law" written by a special legal counsel, Fort Wayne lawyer "Tuck" Hopkins, in regard to a closed-door hearing held by the commissioners in September concerning an incident in August involving a jailer and an inmate at the county jail.

Berne awarded major grant for safety to school

    The city of Berne has been named as a recipient of more than $300,000 in transportation department grant funding to implement the national Safe Routes To School program.
    The announcement of the grant award was made near the conclusion of Monday night's regular meeting of Berne City Council.

20-foot river crest likely early Thursday

    The National Weather Service told local weather station officials late this morning that the St. Marys River is expected to crest at about 20 feet in Decatur around 8 a.m. on Thursday.
    The St. Marys stood at 16.1 feet at 7 a.m. today, just under its 17-foot flood stage. But the river is continuing to rise. The river measured 15.7 feet 24 hours earlier.
    Weather station officials said city received .93 of an inch of rain in the past 24 hours, to go along with the nearly .8 of an inch of weekend rain.

Charles G. Henkenius

    Charles G. “Hank” Henkenius, 77, of Decatur, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Charles was born on October 29, 1934, in Fort Wayne to Charles C. and Emma (Forsythe) Henkenius.
    He married Jean M. Kable on August 27, 1960. She preceded him in death on April 13, 2001.
    Charles was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur. He worked for Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne and was a member of Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur.

Katharina Lehr

    Katharina Lehr, 87, of Saratoga Springs, New York, a former Decatur resident, died at 1:25 a.m. Sunday in Saratoga Springs, where she had moved from Decatur in 2003 to live with her son.
    She was born in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, on April 26, 1924 to Johann and Sara Goertz Wiebe.
    She married Waldemar Lehr in 1949 in Germany; he passed away in 1954.
