Berne council approves an unsafe building law

    A dilapidated, burned-out building on Jefferson Street that has been giving city officials in Berne nothing but headaches for more than a year can finally be addressed, following the city council's emergency adoption on Monday of an unsafe building ordinance which mirrors Indiana code.

Landon shows up in time for the party; Jets again ACAC bad boys

    "Landon knows how to wrestle and he's just now showing it," stated cousin Ben Baker Saturday after an unseeded Landon Baker made it to the 170-pound finals of the NHC Tournament, losing in overtime.
    Ben had the win of the day, finally getting his man Spencer Raypole of Carroll in his fourth try with a takedown in the final ticks of the clock at 195 pounds.

Braves earn 4 top seeds for Jay Mat Sectional

    Bellmont, seeking a 22nd straight sectional mat title, emerged from the seeding meeting with four top spots and two No. 2 seeds for Saturday's Jay County Wrestling Sectional.
    ACAC champion Adams Central has two top seeds and four seconds while South Adams has three No. 1 seeds and two seconds.
    BELLMONT'S TOP SEEDS: (1) Bobby Keuneke at 120, Brooks Faurote at 145, Dewey Melcher at 152, and Ben Baker at 195; (2) Blake Adams at 126, and Brad Busse at 182; (3) Isaac Birch at 220, and Brian Hakes at 285.

Deryl A. Bauman

    Deryl A. Bauman 67, of Decatur, passed away Saturday January 21, 2012, at his residence.
    He was born in Adams County on February 15, 1944, to the late Waldo C. and MaryEllen (Callihan) Bauman.
    On July 11, 1970, he married Joy (DeBolt) Bauman.
    Deryl was a member of High Street United Methodist Church (formerly E.U.B.) in Geneva, the F.O.P., Sons of the American Legion, and the Hoosier Carnival Glass Club.

James A. Downing

January 23, 2012

    James A. Downing, 75, of Berne, died Friday.
    He was born to James F. and Ruth (Devine) Downing.
    Among survivors are a son, James P. Downing, of Berne.
    A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 28, at 1:30 p.m., at Pease Lutheran Church, Pastor Donald Sauls officiating.

Robert E. Kelly Jr.

    Robert  E. Kelly, Jr., 33, of Geneva, died on Thursday at Bluffton Regional Medical Center in Bluffton.
    He was born to the late Robert Eugene Kelly Sr. and Jean (Hale) Kahn, of Decatur.
    Among survivors are his mother, Jean (Hale) Kahn of Decatur; sons, Austin Kelly and Blake Kelly, both of Geneva; and Trevor Kelly of Decatur; daughters, Dani Mosser and Shaylyn Kelly, both of Geneva; brother, Randy Sipe, of Decatur; sisters, Jessica (John) Patch, of Bluffton and Jennifer Kelly of Deland, Fla.

Fredrick H. "Fritz" Liechty

    Fredrick H. "Fritz" Liechty, 84, Goshen, a former Berne native and businessman, passed away Thursday morning at Greencroft Gables, Goshen.
    He was the son of Hiram and Fanny(Beitler) Liechty, born on January 8, 1928, in Berne.
    He married Magdalene "Maggie" (Lehman) on August 26, 1950.

    A special party was held at Evergreen Court on January 6 in honor of Ralph Kenworthy, who celebrated his 106 birthday with family and friends.
    Born in Camden, Ohio, on January 6, 1906, Ralph has been a fixture in Decatur for most of his life. Up until a few years ago, Ralph was still living in his own apartment and could be seen driving through town on his way to a variety of restaurants for a bite to eat, or perhaps to a local bar to play pool against the "younger boys," referring to his friends.

Purdue ensembles to perform in Decatur

    The Purduettes and the Purdue Varsity Glee Club will perform in Erekson Theater at Bellmont High School on Sunday, March 4, starting at 3 p.m.
    Also performing will be the Purdue Flappers, Cowgirls and Ba-Na-Na.
    In addition, the Bellmont High School show choir will perform in a joint musical number with both of the Purdue ensembles.

Fruechte seeks a second term

    Republican Kim Fruechte has announced his candidacy and filing for re-election as District One Adams County Commissioner.
    Fruechte has held the position the past four years and expressed in his announcement that it has been a rewarding experience serving Adams County and that he has the knowledge and desire to continue serving the community.
