Braves soccer banquet set

November 2, 2011

    The Bellmont High School boys soccer team will be holding their annual banquet in the Bellmont cafeteria tomorrow at 7 p.m.
    The freshman players are asked to bring pop and the sophomore players are to bring desserts for the dinner. The coaching staff will have the rest of the dinner catered.
    All players and their family members are invited for the dinner and a small awards show.

Convenience store here robbed today

    Decatur police are continuing their investigation into a robbery that took place at a local business at 3:40 a.m. today.
    Police said a male entered the Village Deli at 927 S. 13th Street, Decatur, and demanded money. The man showed no weapon, but indicated to the store clerk that he was carrying one.

Leaf collection in full swing

    Leaf collection is in full swing in Decatur.
    Leaves should be raked to curbside for collection. City officials said yard waste collection will end next Friday; after that date anyone with yard waste can place those items in the leaf piles or drop them off at the compost site behind the Riverside Center.
    When setting out brush for collection, residents are asked to have those items in a separate pile away from the leaf piles.

City is creating a TIF District

    The process of developing what is described as a powerful economic development tool continued moving toward reality on Tuesday night, getting a green light from Decatur City Council.
    The tool is what is known as a Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District, which was sought by the city's new redevelopment commission.

Braves’ sectional run sparks player reactions

    The Braves were definitely prepared for Yorktown's strong offensive schemes, while the Tigers were seemed puzzled by some of the new wrinkles put in by head coach Larry Getts and his staff, and executed perfectly by a fired-up Bellmont squad. The result was a 22-7 BHS win over the favored Tigers, who had knocked off second-ranked Eastbrook in the first round of the tourney.

Big crowd for a big night

    The annual Callithumpian parade was held under mild October skies Monday evening as characters of every description wound their way through the spectator-lined streets of Decatur for nearly 90 minutes.
    The top three floats in the parade, as named by the Callithumpian Committee, were: first place, Decatur Daily Democrat; second, United Steel Workers Local 715; and third, Decatur Veterinary Hospital.

Ground is broken for visitors’ center

    It will cost $852,500.
    It will have a classroom, an exhibition area, a wildlife viewing area, a gift shop, restrooms, and an office.
    It has been wished for for many years.
    That, in a nutshell, describes the 4,000-square-foot visitor center which will rise by next fall beside the Limberlost State Historic Site (LSHS) in Geneva.

Project to aid those in CC

    Two free programs designed to advise people in Adams County's Community Corrections (CC) system about how to eat healthily and manage their money better will start this month, led by a new staffer in the local Purdue University Extension Service office.
    The project was revealed at Monday's meeting of the commissioners by county CC Director Ian Gilbert and Nancy Manuel, who joined the county's Purdue extension staff in September.

    The Daily Democrat is continuing to experience problems getting our editions out due to a major breakdown at the newspaper's press plant.
    Deliveries of print editions today and Tuesday may be delayed.

Liechty posts state finals time for SA

    TERRE HAUTE—South Adams junior Evan Liechty participated for the Starfires as an individual runner in the IHSAA boys state finals in cross country Saturday and finished 69th overall out of a field of  196 harriers.
    Liechty posted a time of 16:34.3.
