The South Adams Schools Corporation moved forward with the sale of the former elementary school property, located at the corner of US 27 and SR 218 in Berne, when a purchase and sale agreement was signed at this week's board meeting.
A bid of $747,300 was accepted at the end of March from CDI Development Services, LLC, which was the only bid received.
Courtesy Motors, participating in the national Chevy Baseball program, is sponsoring Decatur Baseball for the second straight year, furnishing a host of equipment, funds, and 2,000 raffle tickets towards top prizes, and can be used for $25 off service and a car wash at Courtesy Motors. Lester H. Burkhart Jr, 89, of Decatur, died Monday, May 7, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
Lester was born on August 23, 1922, in Dexter, Kansas, to the late Lester H. Burkhart Sr and Hazel (Fornshell) Burkhart. On April 6, 1947, he married Emma Kathleen Fennig. Lester was a member of Zion United Church of Christ and served as a trustee for 3½ years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 43 and the Moose Lodge 1311 both in Decatur.
With incumbent Republicans in three countywide offices — auditor, treasurer and recorder — sent to the sidelines at the end of the current year by state-mandated term limits, a trio of first-time GOP candidates picked up victories and earned their party's nominations during Tuesday's primary election balloting.
Going green at the North Adams Community Schools will have a slightly different meaning for administrators, non-certified personnel, and transportation department employees as the North Adams School Board approved a two percent pay increase on their base salary.
The action approved Tuesday night at the monthly NA board meeting will result in approximately $50,000 more, but Superintendent Dr. Wylie Sirk told members that money for the increase is already in the general fund and will not cause a problem.

Tony Mellencamp of Berne topped a five-member field in Tuesday's primary election balloting, securing his party's nomination for one of three at-large seats. When the results were announced, however, Mellencamp's wife Kaye was lying in serious condition in a Fort Wayne hospital bed after having been rushed there Tuesday morning when she reportedly suffered a brain aneurism.
Bellmont second baseman Matt Stidam shocked the New Haven Bulldogs in the bottom of the seventh inning when he delivered a 1-0 fastball over the left-field fence to lift the Braves in walk-off fashion to a 4-3 win against their talented NHC rivals on Tuesday night at the Teepee.
After trailing for most of the game, Bellmont tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning and neither team scored again until Stidam's lead-off jack to end the game.
WOODBURN—The Starfires traveled to Woodlan High School on Tuesday night in an ACAC clash with the Warriors and came away with an explosion of offense resulting in a 12-1 victory in six innings.
After a scoreless top of the first, Woodlan looked to be headed for a good night when they scored their only run, which came off of Starfire errors, but South Adams would not go scoreless in an inning again.
Republicans Deb Stimpson, Mary Beery, Thomas Krueckeberg, and Kim Fruechte were among Tuesday's election winners in Adams County.
Stimpson won the Recorder nomination, Beery for Auditor, Krueckeberg for Treasurer and Fruechte was nominated for a new term as county commissioner from District 1.
In the five-person race for three county council nominations, incumbent Dennis Bluhm was the No. 2 vote-getter. Tony Mellencamp ran first and incumbent Randy Colclasure was third.
Today is the last day to "like" the Decatur Daily Democrat Facebook page to be entered into a drawing to receive one of three $10 gift certificates to local businesses. Current and new "likes" are eligible to win.
The gift certificates are to Christner's Pizza King of Decatur, East of Chicago Pizza in Berne or Crossroads Pantry in Geneva.
Winners will be announced on Facebook and on the Decatur Daily Democrat website.
