Schwartz, Reinhard step down at South Adams

    The South Adams Schools Board made several personnel decisions at a special meeting on Tuesday.
    The retirement of Ted Schwartz, an art teacher at the school for 34 years, was approved. Also approved was the resignation of Mary Reinhard as a library aide. Reinhard has worked at South Adams for 16 years.

Police pay hike stirs city debate

    An hour and 20-minute budget discussion at Tuesday night's Decatur City Council meeting was mostly devoted to a stirring, passionate debate over a requested pay increase for members of the city police department.
    In the end, three council members voted to provide a $2,500 increase to each of the 17 members of the department. That will be in addition to the two percent pay boost set up earlier for all city employees.

Decatur gets its first engineer in years

    Decatur now has its first city engineer in years, and also has filled a vacant position with the water department.
    Mayor John Schultz revealed at Tuesday night's city council meeting that he has hired Nathan Rumschlag of rural Decatur for the engineer's position. Meanwhile, a longtime plumber in the city, John Baker, will be joining the water department.

Geneva stands firm on 3.5% fire aid hike

    The Geneva Town Council on Tuesday stuck to its original plan to ask for a 3.5 percent increase in the annual fee paid by surrounding townships to Geneva for fire protection provided by the town's fire department.

    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Canales wins homerun derby

LET THE BIG CAT PURRRR—Drexel Canales, affectionately known as "The Big Cat" by players and friends, recently won the BPA World Series Home Run Derby in Peoria, Illinois. Starting with 30 competitors, Canales had six homeruns in 10 swings including a blast of over 300 feet. The Big Cat, representing the Fort Wayne Stars Academy, sealed the derby crown when he hit five more dingers in a play-off round. The 12-year-old slugger went 4-8 in the tournament competition and the team finished 1-2 losing to the 2011 WS champs. (Photo provided)

Courthouse damage could top $10,000 - Likely lightning zaps electrical equipment

    While Saturday's storm didn't cause any structural damage to county buildings, plenty of electrical equipment was zapped by an apparent lightning strike.
    Dave Meyer, of building maintenance, told the Adams County Commissioners Monday that he checked on the courthouse after he failed to receive a routine status email Sunday morning.

Busy day for police - Apprehensions in two incidents

    City and county law-enforcement authorities had a busy Monday afternoon, conducting an extensive search for an individual northwest of Decatur and during that time apprehending at gunpoint two people in a vehicle reported as stolen. 

Another fire hits downtown Monroeville

    The Decatur Fire Department was dispatched at 6:18 a.m. this morning to assist with a fire at Monroeville Liquors, 102 S Main St., Monroeville.
    Decatur firefighters provided aerial and engine support for the Monroeville Fire Department, which was already battling the blaze when Decatur crews arrived, according to a spokesperson for the department.
    There was "quite a bit of damage" done to the liquor store, while adjacent buildings may have sustained smoke damage, the spokesperson said.
