Appointments by city council wrap up 2014

    It was obvious that Tuesday night’s Decatur City Council meeting was the year’s finale, with several year-end matters handled. Among them were a group of reappointments.
    Ron Storey, Rex Hinsky and Max Miller were given new one-year terms on the city’s redevelopment commission by Mayor John Schultz. North Adams board member Ben Faurote represents that board on the commission, but is a non-voting member.
    Dave Haggard was given a new four-year term on the Board of Zoning Appeals, by the mayor.

CHIMES IN THE NIGHT

City eyes purchase of Schafer building

    With all hope gone of convincing county officials to construct a new court building on the 1st Street site of the abandoned Schafer building, city council on Tuesday night took the first steps toward a possible purchase of the building.
    Before anything can be done, city council needed to appoint Mayor John Schultz as a purchasing agent to look into matter.
    “We’ve not decided anything; this is just the first step that’s required before anything can be done,” the mayor said.

Cameron Allen Barnes

    Cameron Allen Barnes, 25, of Decatur, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, in Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born on Wednesday, Aug. 16, 1989, in Decatur, the son of  Debra (Rauch) Barnes and Brian Barnes.
  Cam was employed in the die cast department at FCC in Berne and had previously worked as a supervisor at Prestress Services Industries in Decatur.

Marjorie J. DeArmond

    Marjorie J. DeArmond, 93, Berne, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, at Swiss Village, where she was a resident.
    She was born to Clemet and Mahala Gottschalk on March 25, 1921, in Adams County. She married James DeArmond on Aug. 2, 1947.
    She was a member of the First Missionary Church, Berne, and retired from General Electric of Fort Wayne with 39 years of service. Her hobbies included gardening and traveling.

Hazel M. Ellis

     Hazel M. Ellis, 98, of Monroeville, and formerly of Decatur, passed away on Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at Adams Heritage in Monroeville.
     She was born on Sunday, Dec. 19, 1915, in Paradise, Ky., the daughter of the late Oscar F. Buchanan and Belva R. (McCormick) Buchanan. She married Glenn L. Ellis on Feb. 19, 1938; he preceded her in death on March 11, 1987.

Tony L. Gerber

December 18, 2014

    Tony L. Gerber, 50, Berne, passed away Dec. 16, 2014 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born to James and Jeannine (Schultz) Gerber on April 1, 1964 in Adams County.
    Survivors include; his mother, Jeannine of Berne; brother, Michael (Jamie) Gerber of Berne; sister, Teresa Ponder of Tampa Bay, Fla.; nephews Kadin and Jerrad Gerber; nieces Mara Myers, Caylin Ponder and Aubri Gerber; and great-nephew, Emmett Myers.
    He was preceded in death by his father.

Herbert H. M. Goelz

    Herbert H. M.  Goelz, 88, of Hoagland, passed away on Wednesday, Dec, 17, 2014, in the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
    He was born on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1926, in Decatur, the son of the late William Goelz and Alma (Tewers) Goelz.  He married Dorothy C. Knipstein on Nov. 4, 1951, in St. John Lutheran Church, Flatrock; she preceded him in death on Aug.9, 2014.

Homes in the Lake Shore addition on Decatur’s easternmost edge are in full holiday mode, with decorative Christmas lights strung at several of the homes there.
 

Sounds of the season

The South Adams Music Department staged its annual Christmas band and choir concert Tuesday evening in Burkhalter Auditorium. Featured were the middle school and high school bands and choirs. Above, Director Curt Amstutz leads the seventh- and eighth-grade band through its performance.
