Harold Nussbaum

October 22, 2014

    Harold Walden Nussbaum, 89, Berne, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2014, at his residence.
    Among survivors are his wife, Marie Wiebe; foster daughter, Stephanie (Loan) Nussbaum Trinh of Houston, Texas; one sister, Doris (Fritz) Thomann of Noble, Ill.; and three brothers, David W. (Carolee) Nussbaum of Berne; Charles E. (Mary) and A. John (Marilyn) Nussbaum, both of Fort Wayne.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Mennonite Church, with Jeff Linthicum and Jerry Flueckiger officiating.

Catherine L. Spiegel

    Catherine L. (Katie) Spiegel, 91, Sumter, S.C., passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2014, at home in Sumter. She was born June 4, 1923, to the late David H. and Berneta (Reynolds) Teeple.
    She graduated from Decatur Catholic High School in 1941. Following graduation she worked for Central Soya in Decatur.
    She married Robert Spiegel June 1, 1946. Bob was career Air Force so they lived in Michigan, Germany, Colorado, Wyoming and finally Sumter.

Marietta Steward

    Marietta (Meyers) Steward, 87, of Piggott, Ark., passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, in Jonesboro, Ark.
    Marietta retired from General Electric in Decatur after 20 years.
    Among survivors are her children, Joyce Butterfield of Tavares, Fla.; John Meyers of Decatur; Judy Schultz of Decatur; and Jeff Meyers of Virginia Beach, Va.
    Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Jerry Morgan officiating. Burial was in Piggott Cemetery in Piggott, Ark.

GE cooperation draws city’s praise

    Work on demolishing the General Electric buildings in Decatur continues to go smoothly and, barring any major problems, the project could be completed by Thanksgiving, perhaps earlier.
    Mayor John Schultz told city council on Tuesday night all structures on the 9th Street property are expected to be down by the end of this week. “Then it will take a couple more weeks or so to clean up. They (the Brandenburg company heading up the work) are pretty sure they’ll be done before Thanksgiving; maybe before that.”

SA superintendent Litwiller rewarded with 4-year pact

    Scott Litwiller has spent nearly his entire life at South Adams Schools, attending the elementary and middle schools as a child, before later graduating from South Adams High School. After a stint in college to complete his education and get his bachelor and master’s degrees, Litwiller returned to South Adams, first as a teacher, then as a building principal before being named superintendant four years ago.

SA fall concert series begins

     Members of the middle school and high school instrumental band classes at South Adams Schools performed in concert Tuesday evening in the high school  gymnasium with a large crowd on hand.

 

Meyer to make Ireland trip

ON TO THE IRISH PITCH— Former Bellmont and University of Saint Francis standout, Sam Meyer, is making the trip to Dublin, Ireland in January to attend a high-profile soccer combine that will feature some of the best and brightest upcoming talent in the sport. Sam’s goal is to become a professional soccer player and the 10-day showcase tour will have scouts from several different leagues searching for impact players to sign to their squads. Go Sambo!   Week seven of Pigskin Picks featured all three brackets that missed just one game enter the money including Richard St. John who nailed the tie-break score of 54* points, Susan Anweiler who took second guessing 52, and Craig Krull who climbs the overall standings once again with a 41. After seven weeks of play, ????? leads with a total of ???? points.

Vicki Macy

    Vicki (Petty) Macy, 58, Linn Grove, passed away on Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at Bluffton Regional Hospital. She was born in Big Springs, Texas, on Dec. 10, 1955, to the late Charles and Mary Jane LeGrand Petty. She married Bryan H. Macy on Feb. 4, 1983; he survives.
    Among survivors are daughter, Lena Elliott of Orleans; granddaughter, Elvira Elliott; sister; Jenny (Tony) Hitchens of Poneto; and four brothers, Chuck (Cindy) Petty of Bluffton; Steve (Cathy) Petty of Bluffton; and Sam Petty of Bluffton; and David Petty of Ossian.

Fall colors a treat for area residents

     Autumn’s color show was likely at its peak late last week, with these horses surrounded by the yellows, oranges and reds that briefly put on a show in Adams County. The photo looks west off Ohio-Indiana State Line Road south of C.R. 900S.
