INDIANAPOLIS — IHSAA Commissioner Bobby Cox announced Monday the new classifications for 409 IHSAA member schools in several sports for the next two school years.
The enrollment figures, the total of boys and girls in grades 9-12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, soccer, softball and volleyball.
The public relations push in support of a North Adams Community School's general fund referendum — which will ask school district voters during this year's May primary election to approve an increase in property taxes to support the financially-struggling district — will include door-to-door canvassing, meetings with township trustees, newspaper and radio promotions, and website postings.
With the big construction/renovation project at Adams Central School making good progress, the AC school board discussed at its February meeting what to do about the elementary school playground.
That play area has been on the north side of the school for many years, but some space was lost when an extension was added for offices, classrooms, and bathrooms to make that side of the school the main entry/exit point.

LEO-CEDARVILLE — "Leo" is a three-letter word that ends in "o" and Leo's Lions are a three-point team with a whole lot of "O."
That point was driven home at home on Tuesday as the highest-scoring high school team in Indiana (at least five games over 100 . . . and counting) bombarded Adams Central, 104-73.
The 31-point margin was the worst loss of the season for the 9-6 Flying Jets, who carried the Lions into overtime in the ACAC Tourney last month before falling, 86-79.
The final four teams in both area girls basketball sectionals are set with No. 1 Bishop Luers hammering Bluffton at South Adams, 70-22, and 3A No. 4 Norwell blasting Maconaquah 79-14.
At South Adams in Friday's semi-finals, the host Starfires will take on Woodlan at 6 p.m. and Adams Central will meet Luers in the 7:30 p.m. second semi-final contest. At Peru in the 3A tourney there, the host Tigers will meet Wayne while Bellmont will take on Norwell.
The championship games will be Saturday night.
The new leaders of the Adams County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff Shane Rekeweg and Chief Deputy Eric Meyer, informed the county council on Tuesday that they have developed a plan to eliminate the "carryover" for years of built-up hours of compensation time, vacation and holiday time, and overtime by some deputy sheriffs and jailers.
A formal proposal calling for members of the North Adams Community School's board of education to be elected, rather than appointed as is currently the case, has been submitted to the Adams County Clerk of Courts and could be headed for a general election vote in 2012.
Maurice J. Goebel, 88, of Decatur, died on February 7, 2011, at Woodcrest Retirement Community's Nursing Center.
He was born on October 25, 1921, to Norbert and Victoria (Stark) Goebel in Edgerton, Ohio.
He married Cecilia E. Noonan on November 26, 1949. She preceded him in death on December 12, 2008.
Maurice was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur.

Early on Tuesday afternoon, an Adams County Highway Department truck lost its two left rear tires on Winchester Rd., a couple of miles northwest of Decatur. One tire hit a car and damaged a door and an exterior mirror.
KENDALLVILLE — East Noble outscored Bellmont 23-13 over the final five minutes of the game Monday night and captured a Northeast Hoosier Conference game over the Braves, 56-44.
The Knights used an unexpected 21-point performance from Kyle Reece which came in handy as Bellmont shut down the main offensive threat from EN, T. J. Blair with only four points. Reece hit six straight shots at one point over the second and third period including a pair of treys.
