Railroaders’ run in third seals victory

    Three quick pops in succession from behind the arc by the Garrett Railroaders spelled defeat for the Bellmont boys basketball team Wednesday night at the Teepee as the Braves fell by a final 62-58 count.

Jets rally, but fall short against New Haven

    MONROE—A comeback rally in the second half fell short for the Adams Central girls basketball team Tuesday night as New Haven survived a quick AC blitz to gain a 46-33 non-conference win at the Hangar.
    New Haven had led by 13 midway through the third period at 31-18  before the Jets, now 2-6 on the season, started to chip away at the Bulldog lead. Madison Carroll and Bess Fiechter scored baskets, the latter coming on an offensive rebound of a missed free throw.

NA implementing evaluation plan

    North Adams schools have begun the process of implementing a state-mandated process of evaluating teachers and principals, with the framework required to be in place for the 2012-13 school year.
    Superintendent Wylie Sirk reported at Tuesday evening's board of education meeting that the new state law ultimately will link student performance with the mandated evaluations, and that the upper tier of educators will be eligible for pay hikes based on those performance levels.

Peaceful end to Geneva standoff

    A tense situation at a rural Geneva household ended peacefully Tuesday evening after a suspect being sought by police surrendered without incident.
    Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg said this morning that officers from the Geneva Police Department attempted to serve an arrest warrant on an individual in a vehicle at a residence on C.R. 000 near C.R. 1050S, east of Geneva, at 4:08 p.m. Tuesday.

South Adams has a potential buyer for tract of land

    The South Adams Schools Board on Tuesday restated its desire to sell the former elementary school property after being informed of a potential buyer.
    Superintendent Scott Litwiller announced at the board meeting that "a national development company has expressed an interest and intent to purchase" the tract of land located at the corner of US 27 and State Route 218 in Berne.

Minch wraps it up

    Barring an 11th-hour emergency session later this month, Mayor John Minch presided over his final meeting of Berne City Council on Monday, wrapping up an eight-year reign as the city's leader and principal spokesman.
    Minch, a Democrat, will conclude his second term as mayor on Dec. 31. He had determined earlier this year that he would not seek re-election.

Casting site cleared for business use

    Larry Macklin, executive director of the Adams County Economic Development Corp. who has been overseeing the cleanup and the inspections of former Decatur Casting industrial site in Decatur, told the county commissioners on Monday that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management has written a "site-status letter" which says the property poses no threat to the health of people or the environment.
    The IDEM report also noted there are no state or federal environmental concerns in regard to the cleaned-up area.

Weather alert codes changed

    Goodbye to green, yellow, red, and black.
    Hello to "advisory," "watch," and "warning."
    At Monday's meeting, the Adams County Commissioners adopted the new statewide system of announcing and handling bad weather or other types of emergencies.
    John August, the county's emergency management director, told the commissioners that a law passed in this year's session of the Indiana General Assembly established three levels to alert the public:

Walter D. Case

    Walter D. “Kielbasa” Case, age 52, of Decatur, formerly of Adrian, Michigan, passed away on December 10, 2011, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on June 26, 1959, in Adrian, the son of William and Rose (Martin) Case.
    Walter was a 1977 graduate of Adrian High School and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Adrian.

Thomas W. Dailey

    Thomas William Dailey, 66, of rural Berne, died at 1:26 a.m. Monday in Parkview Hospital at Fort Wayne.
    He was born on January 15, 1945, in Willshire, Ohio, to Stanton R. and Margaret Brandt Dailey.
    Thomas worked for Decatur Casting for 10 years and was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Decatur.
