Gabriel Abraham Schwartz

November 7, 2012

    Gabriel Abraham Schwartz, a newborn, of Bryant, died Monday.
    Among survivors are his parents, Aden A.C. and Margaret J. (Wengerd) Schwartz of Bryant.
    Private graveside services were held on Tuesday at Bunker Hill Cemetery, Geneva.
    Arrangements were handled by Downing & Glancy Funeral Home.

Lady Cadets spoil Squaws' home opener, 42-25

    It was not a scorer's game at the Teepee on Tuesday night as the Bellmont Squaws hosted Concordia Lutheran in their season opener losing 42-25.
    By the end of the first quarter, it definitely appeared to be the first game of the season for both squads as Bellmont led 3-2 after the frame. Audrey Schultz' three-point play off of an offensive rebound with 3:40 left put the Squaws on the board for the first time as she was slapped on the arm putting the lay-up back in.

Republicans sweep Adams County elections

    It was another Republican sweep in Adams County Tuesday, with the biggest surprise an upset pulled off by Chad Kukelhan, who defeated longtime circuit court judge Frederick Schurger, garnering over 52 percent of the vote.
    Other winners in contested races were: Deb Stimpson, Recorder; Leslie Cook, Coroner; Tony Mellencamp, Dennis Bluhm and Randy Colclasure, three county council seats.

Solid county turnout likely -- Some 2,500 voted early

    Voting was reported heavy in a number of Decatur and Adams County precincts this morning as local voters looked to cast their ballots on not only national and state
races, but local contests as well.
    A number of races dotted the local ballots including, for the first time, North Adams school board elections. Four candidates are seeking two District 1 seats while there are six candidates for two District 2 seats.

New group seeking to offer info aid for needy

    Due to the high unemployment in the community, a group of concerned Adams County residents has developed a new program to help people in times of difficulty.
    "In the past 12 months there has been a new team of local people who are concerned for the many people in our neighborhoods that have faced loss of jobs, illness, and other costly events in their lives," said a statement issued by the group.

$7,000 cooked up by fundraiser for crisis shelter

    Adams Wells Crisis Center (AWCC) officials have announced that their recent event, "Cooking for a Cause," raised more than $7,000 for the shelter. Of that $7,000, the live auction raised $3,900.
    Josh Krueckeberg donated his auctioneering services and Rick Teboe donated the DJ service, according to shelter officials. City police officer Jim Franze won the honor of having the best food dish while Deputy Sheriff Dan Mawhorr won for most creative dish and Jim Verrone won for having the best decorated table.

Teachers team up to pen book

    Two Adams Central teachers, Holly Mishler and Karen Flesch, have gone above and beyond to show their students that even in a small community like Monroe, big things can happen.
    The pair recently collaborated on a children's book called "Grandma's Garden," a story about loss and grief, which can be a confusing time for many, especially children who may have a difficult time discussing the emotions they are experiencing.

    Robert L. Brown, 72, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
    He was born in Adams County on August 13, 1940, to the late Clifford R. and Dorothy M. (Reidt) Brown.
    Robert married Judy Nuzum in August of 1977; she died on August 12, 2011. He then married Edith Northup on September 15, 2012.
