JIM HOPKINSINDIANAPOLIS — Bellmont's 200 freestyle relay team did not get the top swim that it needed Friday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium, finishing 31st out of 32 teams in the preliminary round of the IHSAA Boys State Swimming and Diving championships. The foursome went 1:32.34, slower than its seeded time. A 1:28.28 would have been required to make the top 18, which will compete for places tomorrow. Munster went 1:24.18 to take the top slot in the event. Jay Watters also failed to make the consolation finals, finishing 30th in the 50 free with a 22.72, a second off of his seeded time, and 36th in the 100 free prelims at 50.02, exactly one second off of his seeded time of 49.02. Watters would have needed to better the 21.67, which tied for 18th and required a swim-off in the 50. In the 100 free, a 47.42 was required to make the consolation finals. Harrison Wagner of Brebeuf took the top spot in both events, qualifying first in the 50 with a 20.65, and going a swift 44.78 to top the field in the 100.
Bellmont's three-time first team All-State outside hitter Alex Fuelling has received the ultimate honor in high school sports, selection to an All-American team.
PrepVolleyball.com placed Fuelling, who led Bellmont to the 2010 3A Indiana state crown, on their 2010 All-American list, which includes the 150 top prep volleyball players in the country.
"I'm very proud and very happy for her," stated Bellmont volleyball coach Craig Krull on hearing the news Friday night.
Bellmont's 400 freestyle relay team broke the school record in the Jay County Sectional last Saturday. That record had stood for 27 years. Ironically, that was the last time that Bellmont advanced a swimmer to the second day of state competition. Bellmont's four swimmers set for the 2011 Boys Swimming and Diving State Championships feel they have a chance to break that skein and earn some Bellmont points at Indy.
While Bellmont has some 30 points to make up from a previous loss to Penn in the first round of the IHSAA Team State Wrestling Championships Saturday at Center Grove, Roncalli also has some ground to cover after losing to Perry Meridian 37-15 in a Dec. 11 meet. That was the only loss of the season for the Rebels, coached by former four-time state champ Lance Ellis of Indianapolis Cathedral.
UPDATE: Adams County went to code yellow at noon Friday then the code yellow was dropped shortly before 4 p.m..
County EMA Director John August said at 10 a.m. Friday that winds had lessened enough to allow county road crews to begin plowing out roads, many of which were impassable this morning.
A rural Decatur farmer, Mike Crosby, who recently became a winner in a program called America's Farmers Grow Communities (AFGC), designated that the $2,500 amount he won be turned over to St. Peter-Immanuel Lutheran School in northern Adams County.
The AFGC program is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund to let farmers select nonprofit recipients for the money the farmers win, a news release said.

Decatur and Adams County, along with northern Indiana, are under a winter storm warning. At 1 p.m Thursday, the National Weather Service updated its warning with the following information:
A wintery mix of sleet and snow is expected to begin about 7 p.m. Thursday.
As the storm continues, freezing rain and sleet are expected south of a line that roughly falls through Bluffton and Decatur in Indiana and Van Wert in Ohio.
"We need that championship effort," stated Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote, who has challenged his team to follow the Bellmont tradition and "find that switch and turn it on, take it to the next level" against a strong Penn team Saturday at Center Grove in the first round of the IHSAA Team State Wrestling Tournament.
"We definitely wrestled at a high level at Team Regional against Yorktown and Carroll. If we can find that performance, that level, we'll be fine."
