Wayne E. Frock

September 19, 2012

    Wayne E. Frock, 56, of rural Monroe, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born in Allen County on October 23, 1955, to Robert (Sara) D. Frock, New Haven, and the late Betty Ann (Liebert) Peck.
    He married Sherrill A. Myers on June 28, 1975; she survives in rural Monroe.

Gary R. Huffman

    Gary R. Huffman, 65, of Wren, Ohio, passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
    He was born on Thursday, January 23, 1947, in Adams County, to Richard "Dick" and Nellie (Affolder) Huffman.
    He married Susan Brown on June 27, 1981, in Decatur.

Arrests made in Amish attacks

    Two Fort Wayne men are being held without bond today in the Adams County Jail in connection with several attacks on Amish residents in southern Adams County Monday.
    Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg announced this morning that his department, with assistance from the public and the Berne Police Department, was able to identify and arrest David Veliz, 19, and Alejandro Lopez, 18. Both are preliminarily charged with armed robbery.

Arnold named AD at South Adams

    South Adams High School's head football coach Jason Arnold will be the new athletic director (AD) at the school. The schools' board unanimously approved hiring Arnold for the position at a special meeting on Tuesday (Steve Dobler was absent).
    Arnold will resign from his coaching position at the end of the season and will take on full-time AD responsibilities beginning Monday, Sept. 24. He will serve in both capacities for about six weeks.

City man dies five days after being hit on moped

    David G. Maclean, 81-year-old Decatur resident, who was injured September 11 in a car-moped accident in the city, died Sunday in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
    Maclean had been in the hospital since the accident.
    Police said this morning they were attempting to determine if the death was a result of the traffic accident.

    David G. Maclean, 81, of Decatur, died Sunday at Lutheran Hospital.
    Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

Bulldogs top Braves with late goals

    Bellmont hosted NHC rival New Haven on the soccer pitch Monday night allowing two late goals in the second half to the Bulldogs in a 4-2 loss.
    The Braves had a slow start on the defensive end allowing two New Haven goals in the first 20 minutes but once settled down, Bellmont stopped the bleeding before halftime.
    Andy Hess slipped a ball to Willie Mahlan who finished into the back of the net for Bellmont's first goal of the game just before the half to put the Braves within one at 2-1.

Hank vs. IDEM...Hank wins!

    Adams County Solid Waste District Manager Hank Mayer reported to the district's board of trustees on Monday that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has backed off an earlier requirement that a passive gas study be performed at the county's long-closed south landfill.
    After IDEM earlier this year had required the county to implement the additional test vents to monitor methane gas at the landfill, Mayer called the state agency to protest.

Orlando eats here, purchases painting

    Celebrity singer Tony Orlando stopped in for a meal at Richard's Restaurant in Decatur on Friday after performing at Bearcreek Farms.
     He also purchased an oil painting by local artist Sandy Abel, who is a student of Bonnie Schultz at the North Adams Arts Council. Orlando told restaurant manager and arts supporter Andy Gay that the painting is meaningful to him because monarch butterflies land on his property in Branson, Mo. when they migrate ever year.

Luers taps ex-Bellmont teacher, coach

    Former Bellmont High School football coach Steve Keefer has been named to coach the Bishop Luers football team the remainder of the season in the absence of the terminated Matt Lindsay.
    Lindsay was fired Sunday as the school's football coach and athletic director. No reason was given.
    No replacement for the athletic director's job was announced.
    Keefer, 66, was the Bellmont coach from 1988 to 1993 and continued teaching at BHS until retiring over a year ago.
