Late filing costs Geneva

    Geneva Clerk-Treasurer Bill Warren told council members at Tuesday's council meeting that he was informed by the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF) that the proposed 2013 town budget will not be approved for the requested amount of $574,767.
    Warren said he missed a technical "growth factor" deadline which was for a property tax review form for non-binding review. The deadline was Sept. 4, but Warren submitted the information on Sept. 5.

Activities honoring veterans coming up

    A special event to honor veterans will be held Saturday morning at the Decatur Walmart store, with public participation encouraged.
    Starting at 9 a.m., veterans who work at the store as well as veterans of the community will be honored. "We would like to thank them all for the service that they have done for all of the people of America," a Walmart news release said.

‘Hoosiers’ gym is in need of repairs

    KNIGHTSTOWN, Ind. (AP) — An effort is under way to upgrade one of the most prominent tourism destinations in Henry County.
    The Hoosier Gym Community Center seeks to raise funds for a new roof over the lobby of the facility.
    While the 90-year-old gym itself is intact, water damage is visible in the lobby from the leaky roof. The lobby is where historic photographs and movie memorabilia are kept.

    Ruth B. Sommer, 95, of Decatur, died Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    She was born in Adams County on September 9, 1917, to the late Wade H. and Eva Caroline (Ehling) McBarnes.
    On March 25, 1939, she married Eugene J. Sommer; he preceded her in death.
    Ruth was a member of Salem United Church of Christ; its Women’s Guild and was past president of the Sunbeam Garden Club.

First-timer Kukelhan garners 52.4% of vote to defeat Schurger

    It was a Republican landslide in Adams County as local GOP candidates swept their way to victory in every countywide race during Tuesday's general election balloting.
    Among the high-profile wins was a 628-vote victory by first-time candidate Chad Kuklehan over incumbent Democrat Frederick Schurger for the seat as judge of the Adams Circuit Court.

Mellencamp gets to celebrate this time; Stimpson, Cook win

    Six short months ago, Tony Mellencamp was deprived of the celebration which should have accompanied his primary election victory in his bid for an at-large seat on the Adams County Council.
    His joy that night was muted after his wife, Kaye, was rushed to the hospital earlier in the day with a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Her chances of survival initially were set at 1 in 10.

North Adams board picks: Ehlerding, Converset, Bulmahn, Voglewede

    It was an evening of historic proportions Tuesday as the first publicly-elected members of the North Adams school board were selected during this year's general election balloting.
    Winning four-year terms on the board were incumbent Tim Ehlerding and newcomer Alan Converset in District 1 and first-time candidates Mark Bulmahn and Jim Voglewede Jr. in District 2. Debra Bergman, the District 2 incumbent, finished third in the balloting and will leave the board at the conclusion of her current term.

    Sidney L. Fennig, 66, of Decatur, passed away at his residence on Monday, November 5, 2012.
    He was born in Adams County on January 19, 1946, to the late G. Richard and Emma (Fogle) Fennig.
    On January 6, 1979, he married Mary M. Minnich; she survives in Decatur.

    Mary Louise "Mamie" Ries, 78, of Ohio City, Ohio, passed away at 7:41 a.m. on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at St. Rita Medical Center in Lima.
    She was born in Ohio City on November 24, 1933, to the late Sherman "Buck" and Edna (Ayers) Fenton.
    On October 19, 1977, she married Stephen Wayne Ries; he passed away on December 5, 1979.

    Gabriel Abraham Schwartz, a newborn, of Bryant, died Monday.
    Among survivors are his parents, Aden A.C. and Margaret J. (Wengerd) Schwartz of Bryant.
    Private graveside services were held on Tuesday at Bunker Hill Cemetery, Geneva.
    Arrangements were handled by Downing & Glancy Funeral Home.
