Davis helps vets via fast-food gift cards

    Leader of the Veteran's Gift Card Project, and Pastor of Redkey and Dunkirk Mt. Tabor United Methodist churches, Randy "McRandy" Davis began his campaign to give $5 McDonald's gift cards to veterans in 2011 after taking a friend who had been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gerig's disease, to the Marion VA hospital.

City awarded $400,000 grant - Will be used to raze onetime city garage

    The city of Decatur has been awarded a $400,000 federal Community Development Block Grant to help pay for the cost of demolishing a former street department building that has been deemed a public hazard and an eyesore.
    The grant, announced Friday by Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman, was made available through the Indiana Community Focus Fund and is administered through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA). Decatur was one of 38 Hoosier communities to share in CFF grants totaling $16,248,626.

Homecoming events slated at ACentral

    Adams Central High School is holding Homecoming activities this week, culminating with the crowning of the king and queen Friday night.
    Following is the schedule:
    Today, Powder Puff football, 7 p.m. Farmer Olympics will take place between games.
    Wednesday, Sledgehammer volleyball, 6:30 p.m.
    Friday, Homecoming crowning, 6:30 p.m. Student dance to follow football game.

Harold J. Bailey

    Harold J. Bailey , 50, of Geneva, died on Saturday at Parkview Regional Medical Center as a result of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
    Among survivors are a son, Joseph W. Bailey, and a daughter, Emiley A. Bailey both of Bryant.
    Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. at Downing & Glancy Funeral Home on Tuesday and one hour prior to services on Wednesday.
    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Dennis C. Boerger

September 4, 2012

    Dennis C. Boerger, 62, of Decatur died Sunday at his residence.
    Arrangements are pending at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home.

David S. Gravens

September 4, 2012

    David S. Gravens, 56, of Decatur, died Sunday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Private services will be held.
    Arrangements were handled by Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.

O. Kathleen Sauers

September 4, 2012

    O. Kathleen (Zerkel) Sauers, 84, of Decatur, passed away on August 31, 2012, in Fort Wayne.
    She was born to the late Oliver K. and Marie (Burdg) Zerkel on March 27, 1928, in Decatur.
    Kate married Wayne E. Sauers on May 18, 1947; he survives.
    She was a member of the Living Water Church, where she was very active as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, and served on various committees.

Braves fall flat in 2nd half against CC

    COLUMBIA CITY—Untimely penalties and the absence of a "big play" kept Bellmont from staying undefeated on Friday night as they ventured to Columbia City for their first NHC meeting of the year.
    The Braves, now 2-1, fell to the Eagles (2-1) 24-13, after being shut down in the second half.
    Bellmont coach Larry Getts commented after the game, "We didn't have any consistency in the second half."

Joan Hawkins

    Joan Hawkins, 82, of Decatur, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Chalet Village.
    She was born on Tuesday, December 17, 1929, in Decatur, to the late Lavern and Isabel (Peterson) Bowman.
    Joan married Forrest Hawkins on January 24, 1948; he passed away on June 18, 1998.

LeRoy W. Yoder

    LeRoy W. Yoder, 80, of Berne, met his Lord and Savior at 10:40 a.m. on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on September 4, 1931, in Adams County, to Raymond and Ida (Habegger) Yoder of rural Geneva.
    LeRoy was married on March 6, 1954 to Barbara Lehman. The couple celebrated 58 years of marriage.
