‘Special among us’ Nick Taylor’s life celebrated before over 4,000 ‘friends’

    Nick Taylor was remembered as a leader, a patriot, "an amazing soldier" and dearly missed son, brother and friend during funeral services Tuesday in Berne.
    More than 4,000 of Taylor's "friends" crowded into the same South Adams High School gymnasium where he had accomplished some of his most remarkable athletic feats to pay tribute to the young man from their community who gave his life for his country and the cause of freedom.

Full-time replacement for CC is denied by commissioners

    Adams County offices that currently have full-time employees may not necessarily get to keep full-time employees, according to Adams County Commissioners.
    Community Corrections Executive Director Ian Gilbert met with commissioners Monday to ask for permission to hire a full-time replacement for the office's administrative assistant, who will be leaving at the end of August.
    Gilbert said the position is, and always has been, full-time and he would like to keep it that way.

Adams County schools announce registration schedules

    Following is registration information for Adams County's three public school systems plus St. Joseph Catholic School in Decatur.

North Adams
    Officials have announced the following dates and times:
    Southeast Primary and Northwest Elementary: Monday, August 6, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-7 p.m.
     Bellmont Middle School: Monday, August 6, 4-7 p.m., and Tuesday, August 7, 1-4 p.m.

DBA Skills competition winners

     Last week, the Decatur Baseball Association hosted a skills competition for the Mays and Reese Leagues and had a successful turnout. The skills contest tested players ability to bat and field among other fundamentals.

   Jon Ruble, a player from Decatur Dental, took first place in the Reese League competition, while Tanner Walker, Kobe Oritz, and Caden Staub all took home trophies for their work from the Mays League.

'Flag man' in Berne; mourners pay respects

    Illinois resident Larry Eckhardt wanted to find a way to pay tribute to fallen soldiers and their families. So seven years ago he began traveling around the nation putting up full-sized American flags in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
    Over 100 people gathered Saturday at South Adams High School to help Eckhardt put up approximately 2,200 flags in Berne in honor of Spc. Nick Taylor, who recently died in Afghanistan.

Burn ban is lifted-But caution is urged

    The Adams County burn ban has been lifted . . . with extreme caution, according to Decatur Fire Chief Les Marckel.
    Marckel released a statement to the Adams County Commissioners Monday saying that all three Adams County fire chiefs agreed the ban could be lifted, with caution.
    "Some areas of the county have not received as much rain as others and the conditions are still very conducive to grass fires and the like," said Marckel.

Principal is hired by BHS

    Kimberly G. Harsh has been hired as the new principal at Bellmont High School,  North Adams Community School's Superintendent Wylie Sirk announced Monday in a press release.
    Harsh has been principal at Hauser Junior-Senior High school in Hope, Indiana, for four years and spent five years as assistant principal at the school.

Thomas L. Butler

    Thomas L. “Tom” Butler, 77, of rural Decatur, died Monday, July 30, 2012, at Woodcrest Extended Care Unit.
    Tom was born in Adams County on October 17, 1934, to the late Hubert L. and Luella A. (Kelley) Butler.
    He married Brenda M. (Levy) on March 14, 1954; she preceded him in death on November 26, 2007.
    Tom was a member of the First Baptist Church, the American Legion Post 43 and Moose Lodge 1311. Tom served his country in the United State Navy during the Korean Conflict.

Samuel E. Shinabery

    Samuel E. Shinabery, 68, of Craigville, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2012. 
    He was born on October 29, 1943, in Fort Wayne, to the late Samuel S. and Emma G. (Berry) Shinabery. 
    Samuel retired from ITT as an auto mechanic instructor after 30 years. He was a member of Fort Wayne R&R, Ossian Conservation Club, Decatur Eagles Flying Club, and the NRA.
