Big night at 4-H Fair

    Heat didn't deter the turnout in Monroe for the 4-H Fair's big night on Tuesday.
    Among those riding were grand marshals Shirley Steiner and Gloria Sommer.
    Following the parade, Elizabeth Liechty was announced as this year's Royal Ambassador, with Devan Barger named the Distinguished Ambassador.
    Other Ambassadors are Elizabeth Shaw, Dusty Gremaux, Lori Dunham, Ryan Hockemeyer, Cody Fuelling, Casey Krueckeberg, Macy Mudd, and Logan Roe.

City redoing personnel policy; eyes ATV ban, P&B abatement

    In what was for it a lengthy meeting, Decatur City Council on Tuesday night handled a number of issues, including an update of the city personnel policy, launching an ordinance to ban off-road vehicles on off-road city property, and moving toward a tax abatement for a local company.
    Although there have been some amendments over the years, the personnel policy has not had a good going-over since 1993 until recently, with all council members getting time to look over proposed changes.

William A. Bailey

    William A. Bailey, 83, of Decatur, died on Monday at his residence.
    There is no visitation or funeral service.
    Arrangements were by Zwick and Jahn Fueral Home.

Cawood Ball

July 18, 2012

    Cawood Ball, 92, of Bean Station, Tenn., died July 4, 2012, at Lakeway Regional Hospital, Morristown, Tenn.
    He was born November 23, 1919, in Harlan County, Ky.
    Cawood was a Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II. He retired from The Magnavox Company after 33 years of service as a truck driver, based in Fort Wayne, and later Greeneville, Tenn. He attended First Baptist Church of Bean Station. He was an avid fisherman and original member of the Greeneville Bass Club.

Tomasa M. Serna

    Tomasa M. Serna, 81, of Decatur, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
    She was born in Malakoff, Texas, on December 28, 1930, to the late Isaac and Alejandra (Guerrero) Mendez.
    On October 28, 1950, she married Eriberto “Bob” Serna; he preceded her in death December 8, 2009.
    Tomasa was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and Hispanic Society. She was a homemaker and mother to all.

Nicholas A. Taylor

    Nicholas A. “Nick” Taylor, 20, of Berne, son of Berne Police Chief Tim and Stephania Taylor, lost his life Monday in Afghanistan. 
    Funeral arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

Wilder hurls no-hitter

    Beka Wilder of Minds Eye Graphics pitched a no-hitter against First Bank of Berne on Monday evening during a senior league game at Hannah Nuttman as the squad topped Bank, 8-0.
    The only blemish on the hurler for the night was seven issued walks to Bank batters but timely K's made up for the free passes as she ended up with nine strikeouts in the game as Mind's Eye coasted to another victory.

Muncie AAU team places fifth

   AAU NATIONAL TEAM—The Asics Munciana Mogwai volleyball team out of Muncie, IN recently placed fifth in the nation in the 13-Open division of the 2012 AAU Jr. National Volleyball Championships held in Orlando, FL on in late June. This year they also competed in the JVA Wold Challenge in Houston on March 30 where they finished second overall. Players on the team consist of girls from the Muncie area with two players from Indy, and a local Decatur player, Taylor Bebout, who is in the back row second from the left in the photo above. Berne soldier Nick Taylor killed in Afghanistan

    BERNE — The family of an Indiana National Guard soldier from Berne says he was killed Sunday night during an attack in Afghanistan.
    Nick Taylor, 20, of Berne was driving an armored truck when it was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade, according to his brother Drew Taylor. He told The Journal Gazette that Guard officials told the family that his brother wasn’t the only soldier killed in the attack but didn’t give details.

Big night on tap at the fair

    The Adams County 4-H Fair has crowned a Miss Adams County, Kaylea Kongar, and tonight it will crown its 2012 Royal Ambassador.
    Tuesday is always one of the biggest nights for the 4-H annual event and tonight will hold to that tradition. The parade, led by grand marshals Gloria Sommer and Shirley Steiner, will begin to roll through the streets of Monroe at 7.
    Following the parade, attention will shift to the fair stage where several recognitions will be given and the new Royal Ambassador will be announced.
