Sewer board, Decatur to keep talking

    Negotiations are continuing between the Adams County Regional Sewer District board and the city of Decatur pertaining to sewage treatment costs for a proposed $4.5 million sewer project to serve the outlying areas of Monmouth, Bobo, Pleasant Mills and Arcadia Village.
    While those talks are ongoing, however, regional sewer board members on Tuesday were urged to look at other options — including the possibility of sending sewage to Berne — to make the proposed sewer project as cost effective as possible.

Stacy Bussel joins NA education board

    Just a few hours after the first day of classes had ended for the new school year at North Adams Community Schools, school board members on Tuesday evening filled several remaining personnel vacancies — including one in their own ranks.
    Stacy Bussel was issued the oath of office and joined the board to complete the remainder of the term of former board member Don Elder. Elder resigned his at-large seat on the board effective July 16, citing family health reasons.

Defender part-time secretary hire approved

    Attorney Joe Johnson III went before the Adams County Council to request an additional appropriation to hire a part-time secretary for the public defender's office.
    Johnson said there is currently $104,332 available in the public defender's fund and no additional funds are needed by the county to fill the position.

Squaws win opener against Dwenger

    The Squaws renewed their quest for another state title on Tuesday night as they hosted the once formidable Bishop Dwenger Lady Saints at the Teepee.
    While usually a tight match to start the season for Bellmont, Dwenger proved to be slightly less challenging for the Squaws as they were felled 25-10, 25-14, 25-18 in straight sets.

    Virginia J. "Jo" Bacon, 63, of Ossian, passed away Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
    She was born March 15, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa, to the late John and June (Billings) Theisen.
    Jo retired from Ossian Health and Rehabilitation as Activity Director. She was a member of Ossian First Presbyterian Church and enjoyed planning family gatherings and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Damage costs rising

    The cost to repair damages to the electrical system at the Adams County Courthouse, which was zapped during severe storms that whipped through the area at the beginning of August, is much higher than initially thought.
    Dave Meyer of building maintenance told the Adams County Commissioners on Monday that the estimated cost to repair the electrical damage caused by an apparent lightning strike is now around the $60,000 mark, a substantial jump from the initial $20,000 estimate in the days immediately following the storm.

Berne hikes water rates

    Berne City Council on Monday evening approved the city's first water rate hike in more than 30 years. Following a lengthy discussion the panel agreed to an increase which will boost the average customer's monthly water bill by nearly $8.50.
    Clerk-treasurer Gwen Maller said residents of the city of Berne have not experienced an increase in water rates since 1980. The last time water utility rates in the city were adjusted was 2000, and on that occasion the rates were reduced, Maller said.

Berne reduces fire protection fee offer

    Berne city officials have reduced their proposed fee increase for rural fire protection services in 2013, but did not agree to a request from trustees in southern Adams County townships to leave the fire protection costs at 2012 levels.
    Berne had submitted to the townships a 3.5 percent increase in fire service charges for 2013, after several years of imposing a 5 percent annual hike. But the township officials balked at the proposed increase.

Stars lose season opener to Blackford

August 14, 2012

    South Adams opened their volleyball season at home last night with a contest against the Blackford Lady Bruins that ended in a four set win for the visitors spoiling new head coach Amie Sprunger's first match.
    After losing the first set, 25-21, the Stars let set two fall away without a fight, 25-12. Coach Sprunger rallied the troops and SA came alive taking the third set, 25-16, then fell, 29-27 in extra volleyball during the fourth set.

Pries resigns South Adams post

August 13, 2012

    Embattled South Adams Athletic Director Mike Pries confirmed this morning that he has resigned his position.
    Pries, who survived a 3-2 vote of the school board two years ago after then-superintendent Cathy Egolf attempted to have him fired, recently was highlighted when it was learned Paul David Baker, 48, a friend of Pries, was a SA volunteer girls basketball coach who was required to register as a sexually violent predator.
