Julia J. Wenger

July 6, 2012

    Julia J. "Judy" Wenger, 81, of Decatur, passed away at 3:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2012, at her residence, following a month-long illness.
    Judy was born on Thursday, November 13, 1930, in Denver, Colorado, to the late Calvin and Catherine (Case) Smith.
    She married Norman Wenger on June 18, 1949, in Bluffton; he survives in Decatur.

Youth League tournament info released

    Masters Heating & Air, with a sterling 13-2 record, earned the top seed in the Hoosier East Baseball Alliance Reese (12-U) Tournament, which begins Monday with games at Monmouth and Decatur.
    Trupointe of Monroeville will meet Oetting Insurance of Monmouth in the 8 p.m. game at Monmouth on Monday. Erie Haven (8-7) will meet Miller Land Surveying (5-9) in a first round game, also at 8 p.m. Monday, at Rube Wynn Field.

City workers to get 2% pay hike

    Full-time City of Decatur workers will be getting a two percent pay boost next year, marking the second year in a row they've received an increase after going the two previous years without.
    Mayor John Schultz recommended the two percent hike at Tuesday night's city council meeting and council readily agreed.

Fireworks ban here bolstered by council

    Although fireworks were banned in Decatur by city officials over a week ago, there has been some question whether the city had the authority to do so. It now appears that most doubt is gone following the passage of an emergency proclamation at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
    Probably two-thirds of Indiana counties have instituted burn bans during this summer of drought, and many communities have banned the use of fireworks.

Proposed Geneva budget is up a bit

    The Geneva Town Council reviewed the proposed 2013 town operating budget of $574,767 at its meeting this week. The proposed budget, prepared by Clerk-Treasurer Bill Warren, is $20,980 more than the 2012 budget.
    The budget proposal for 2013 outlines $409,139 of spending from the General Fund and $165,628 from the Motor Vehicle-Highway Fund.
    The budget will be reviewed again next month. A public hearing will be held in September, and the town expects to adopt the budget in October.

Fern L. Lough

    Fern L. Lough, 65, of Decatur, passed away at 6:15 p.m. on July 3, 2012, at Lutheran Hospital.
    She was born on August 12, 1946, in Adams County, to the late Theodore and Treva (Rash) Mihm.
    Fern married John W. Lough on November 2, 1966; he died on November 1, 2007.

Ruth E. Schwartz

    Ruth E. Schwartz, 91, of Berne, died Wednesday at Swiss Village.
    Among survivors are daughters Jocelyn (James) Blum and Amy (Ken) Troutman, both of Fort Wayne, and a son, Ted (Lana) Schwartz of Berne.
    Visitation will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. in Swiss Village Chapel, and one hour prior to services on Monday at 11 a.m., also in the chapel.
    Burial will be at MRE Cemetery, Berne.
    Arrangements were by Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

     Colquest took second place in the tournament after winning the season title in the MYL. The championship game, played last Thursday, went into eight innings and was played in 100+ degrees. Andy Griffith dies at age 86

    RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Andy Griffith, who made homespun Southern wisdom his trademark as the wise sheriff in ‘‘The Andy Griffith Show’’ and the rumpled defense lawyer in ‘‘Matlock,’’ died Tuesday. He was 86.
    Griffith died about 7 a.m. at his coastal home, Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement.
