Betty J. Boggs

July 2, 2012

    Betty J. Boggs, 83, a resident of rural Churubusco and mother of Decatur resident Deena (Arthur) Sloffer, passed away at 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the family residence in Green Township following an extended illness.
    Mrs. Boggs was born in Smith Township in Whitley County on May 14, 1929, the daughter of Orlando and Lela N. (Shlater) Geiger. She spent her formative years in the Churubusco-area and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1947.  

Cleanup hits high gear

     "It's not real terrible now; I'd say comparable to that storm we had three or four years ago," Decatur Street/Sanitation Superintendent Jeremy Gilbert said at noon Sunday of the ongoing cleanup following a storm which popped up amid high heat and humidity around 3 p.m. Friday, blowing through Decatur and Adams County and creating widespread damage.
    No serious injuries were reported.

Power likely back today; restaurants busy, if open

    Indiana &  Michigan Power website this morning showed more than 1,000 Adams County homes remained without electricity.
    The Friday afternoon storm damaged trees and downed power lines as it moved through the area and interrupted electric service for over 118,000 I&M customers in the region. Early today, 48,000 homes in Allen County remained without service. In Wells County, 500 residences were still in the dark and more than 300 Jay County homes were without electrical service.

Herman E. Fosnaugh

    Herman E. Fosnaugh, 95, of Berne, died on Saturday at Swiss Village.
    Among survivors are two sons, Corwin (Ann) Fosnaugh of Berne and Jerry (Pat) Fosnaugh,  of Fort Wayne; and a daughter, Donna (Robert) Bockover of Riverside, California.
    Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today in the Swiss Village Chapel. Funeral services are Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church.
    Burial will be in MRE Cemetery, Berne.

Two airlifted after buggy hit

July 2, 2012

    A Sunday evening car-buggy mishap on U.S. 27 at 10:38 p.m. just north of the Adams-Jay County line resulted in two occupants of the buggy being airlifted to Parkview Hospital with severe injuries.
    The Adams County Sheriff's Department reported this morning that Richard A. Romine, 32, Portland, was northbound on U.S. 27 when he came upon a northbound Amish buggy operated by Raymond A. Girod, 19, rural Geneva.

Storm rips Decatur area

A freak thunderstorm packing winds in excess of 65 miles per hour passed through Decatur and Adams County on Friday, leaving a trail of destruction — but no serious injuries initially reported — in its wake.

Records fall; 102 here...and no relief is in sight

    Thursday will go down as the hottest day ever for many Indiana locales, and Decatur recorded an official high of 102 degrees.
    The National Weather Service said a large ridge of high pressure brought in the hottest temperatures in nearly 80 years. The mercury hit a record 106 degrees in Fort Wayne and Evansville and 104 degrees in Indianapolis.
    For other cities, it was the hottest it’s been in Indiana since 1988.

Berne pay hikes seen; Provost still ‘no’ on council

    Pay hikes for full-time employees of the city of Berne seem assured for 2013; likewise with proposed salary increases for the mayor and clerk-treasurer. Minor pay hikes for members of city council? Well, that's a different story.
    For the second time in two weeks, City Council member Phil Provost on Monday evening voted against a $250 annual pay raise recommended by Mayor Bill McKean.

County group ‘hams’ it up for a Field Day here

    Despite the Internet, cell phones, e-mail and modern communications, every year entire regions find themselves in the dark, said Derek Augsburger, emergency coordinator for the Adams County ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) team.
    "Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate," Augsburger said.

Vernon W. Luginbill

    Vernon W. Luginbill, 80, of Decatur, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born on October 30, 1931, in Mercer County, Ohio, to the late Roy and Goldie (Bollenbacher) Luginbill.
    On December 12, 1954, he married Martha Jane Bollenbacher; she preceded him in death on September 12, 2004.
