Berne to hold public hearing Monday on water rate hike

September 21, 2012

    A public hearing will be held at 8 p.m. next Monday, Sept. 24, in Berne City Hall to accept community input surrounding a proposed increase in municipal water rates.
    Berne City Council recently gave its first reading to an ordinance that would boost monthly water rates for average users by $8.42 per month. The increase would represent the city's first water rate hike in more than 30 years.

Deadly deer virus is said discovered in Adams County

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A deadly virus has killed deer in at least four Indiana counties and is suspected in dozens more.
    Indiana Department of Natural Resources biologist Chad Stewart said Thursday epizootic hemorrhagic disease has been confirmed in samples collected from dead deer in LaGrange, Miami, Morgan and Sullivan counties.

    Marian A. (Ringger) Meyer Hedrick, 75, of Fort Wayne, passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2012.
    Raised in Grover Hill, Ohio, Marian attended Grover Hill High School where she graduated as salutatorian; she then graduated with honors from Defiance College in 1958.

    David G. MacLean, 81, of Decatur died on September 16, 2012, in Lutheran Hospital.    David served in the United States Air Force. He was self-employed selling Americana Books.
    He is survived by a brother, Don MacLean, of Springfield, IL.
    Graveside services were held Thursday at Decatur Cemetery. Arrangements were by Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home.
 

Stunner slips through Squaws' fingers

    FORT WAYNE—A 48-game conference winning streak came to an end on Thursday night at Carroll as the Squaws fell to the Lady Chargers in a five-set gem that lived up to the pre-game billing.
    Bellmont stumbled out of the gate losing the first two sets before finding life in set three and squeaking out set four, only to let the fifth and deciding set slip through their fingers 25-21, 25-21, 25-10, 25-23, 15-11.

Two in jail for Amish attacks

    Alejandro Lopez, 18, and David Veliz, 19, both of Fort Wayne, were arrested and an unnamed juvenile have been detained by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department for their involvement with alleged crimes committed against members of the Amish community in Adams County last Monday, according to Adams County Prosecutor Chris Harvey.
    The prosecutor said both men have been preliminarily detained pending charges of armed robbery and criminal confinement.

More than 200 students take part in a day-long seminar held at BHS

    Students in Bellmont High School's Health Careers class and in Project Lead the Way kicked off a day-long seminar Wednesday morning with the arrival of the Samaritan lifeline helicopter from Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne.
    The seminar offered demonstrations, lectures and power point presentations for the students in the two career-oriented courses.
    Paramedics and nurses were on hand throughout the day to explain their careers, purposes and lifesaving measures.

Diocese: Coach fired over ‘video clips’

    The Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church released a statement on Wednesday in which it confirms that Bishop Luers head football coach Matt Lindsay was dismissed from that position earlier this week after "a large number of inappropriate video clips, none involving nudity, were discovered" on the coach's computer.

    Edward Diaz, 87, of New Lenox, Ill., died Wednesday in Hazel Crest, Ill.
    Among survivors are two daughters, Gloria J. Tomchek of New Lenox,Ill., and Dorothy F. Marnell of Mattsen, Ill., and a son Robert L. Diaz of South Holland, Ill.
    Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Friday at Yager-Kirchhofer F. Home, Berne, with visitation one hour prior to services.
    Burial will be in the MRE Cemetery, Berne.

    Rosemary Holthouse, 92, formerly of Decatur, died on January 23, 2012 in Joliet, Illinois.
    She was born in Decatur on July 8, 1920, to the late Fredrick (Frickle) Fullenkamp and Esther Corbett Fullenkamp.
    Rosemary married Louis A (Jack) Holthouse; he died September 24, 1998.
