Richard J. Alexander

March 21, 2012

    Richard J. Alexander, 65, of Berne, died Tuesday in Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Among survivors are his wife, Carol (Lawrence) Alexander of Berne and a son, Lee Alexander, Berne.
    Visitation will be Friday at Yager-Kirchoffer Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Services and burial will be held at a later date in St. Augustine, Fla.

Bellmont wins a pair at Luers

    FORT WAYNE–Bellmont picked up a pair of early season track wins over Bishop Luers Tuesday night at Luers Field with the Braves notching an 86-46 triumph over the Knights while the Squaws dealt their foes a 92-33 setback.
    The win for the Braves was impressive considering the fact they went winless last season.

Rupright named Miss Indiana Basketball

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Norwell’s Jessica Rupright is The Indianapolis Star’s Indiana Miss Basketball.
    Norwell’s career leader in points (1,591) and rebounds (728), received 41 votes of the 206 total cast by media and coaches. North Central’s Nariah Taylor (19 votes) and Mt. Vernon’s Jessica Brown (17) were second and third, respectively, the Star announced in its Wednesday editions. A total of 36 players received at least one vote.

Calendar has caught up with weather

    At 1:14 a.m. today, the calendar caught up with the weather.
    Most years, the arrival of spring — which occurred at that time this morning — is cause for celebration, with promises of better weather ahead. This year, however, the beginning of spring simply means ... well, another pleasant, warm, sunny day with temperatures considerably above normal.

Solid waste victory could be small one

    Solid waste districts across Indiana won a small victory in the recent General Assembly session, but that success could be short-lived, according to Adams County solid waste director Hank Mayer.

Music House studied, courthouse next

    Dave Sholl of Schenkel and Schultz Architects presented the Adams County Commissioners with a detailed presentation Monday regarding the feasibility and cost of renovating the old Music House building into a structure that would essentially house all of the Adams County court offices.
    Sholl gave a power-point presentation demonstrating how the building could be transitioned into an all-purpose county facility, housing both superior and circuit courts, probation, Community Corrections, and the clerk's office.

Barbara A. Geyer

    Barbara A. Geyer, 79, of Bluffton, a former longtime Adams County resident, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2012, in the Christian Care Retirement Community, Bluffton.
    She was born on Wednesday, November 9, 1932, in Adams County, the daughter of the late Arthur J. and Anna M. (Burkhead) Hurst.
    She married George J. Geyer on September 5, 1953, in Decatur.
    Barbara was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Friedheim.

Loretta Hilty

    Loretta Hilty, one day old, of Geneva, died Sunday in Geneva.
    She was the daughter of Martin Hilty and Rebecca J. (Wickey) Hilty of Geneva.
    Among survivors are her parents; three brothers, Martin R. Hilty, Walter R. Hilty, and Leander R. Hilty, all of Geneva; three sisters, Rebecca R. Hilty, Susanna R. Hilty, and Lorene R. Hilty. all of Geneva;.
    Visitation was from 9 a.m.-noon today. Services will be held at the same address at 2 p.m. today.

Jennie L. McCoy

    Jennie L. McCoy, 81, of Monroeville, passed away at 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2012, in the Parkview North Hospital.
    Jennie was born on Sunday, August 3, 1930, in Antwerp, Ohio, the daughter of the late Sidney and Ethel (Laney) Carr.    She married the late Daniel H. McCoy on June 21, 1947;  he passed away on March 14, 2007.
    Jennie was a homemaker and raised her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Academic All-State Honorable Mention for two Squaws

    Bellmont seniors Allison Gutierrez and Mikala Quinn were selected to the Academic All-State Honorable Mention list at the girls’ basketball banquet last week. The girls were selected for their outstanding play on the court and success in the classroom as well.
