Arbor Day event, meal is Thursday

April 20, 2015

     Adams County Director of Forestry Dwight Pierce announced Decatur will join in the celebration of the Arbor Flight 2.0 at 3:45 p.m. Thursday at the Boys and Girls Club in Decatur.
     Arbor Flight 2.0 is part of the annual Arbor Day celebration during which helicopters transport local dignitaries to sites in Indiana so they may participate in tree planting ceremonies and educational programming.

Strange pond fellows

    A bullfrog seems to have befriended a ceramic lizard in the backyard pond of a Decatur home. How long the relationship lasts is anyone’s guess.

Central blasts Tigers, 10-2

    MONROE— Adams Central's bats swung wide open earning them their first victory of the young season on Thursday night with a 10-2 victory over the Bluffton Tigers.
    A five-run first inning set the tone for the Jets led by six singles in the frame. Cody Crump stole home to break open the scoring, then Luke Liter, Lance Busse, and Matt Baker would smack three consecutive RBI singles scoring one run apiece.

Ritz to take part in ‘Dots’ food effort

    Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz will take part in a community-wide event focusing on world hunger to be held April 24 at South Adams Schools.
    SA Superintendent Scott Litwiller announced Ritz’s planned appearance at this week’s school board meeting.
    The South Adams Schools student-led organization Dots in Blue Water is organizing the special day, in conjunction with the not-for-profit organization Feed My Starving Children to focus on global hunger.

Library book sale

    Ron Platt, a library volunteer and member of the Friends of the Library, is pictured helping a local resident peruse the selection of discounted books currently available at the Adams Public Library System Decatur branch. The book sale has been ongoing since last weekend. On Friday and Saturday patrons can purchase a bag of books for $2.

Starfires blast Canterbury softball in five innings, 19-0

FORT WAYNE— After losing to county rival Adams Central to start their season, the South Adams Lady Stars have come up with their second straight win dismantling the Canterbury Cavaliers 19-0 in five innings.
“It’s a confidence builder,” noted SA coach Jessie O’Dell after the win. “We had some kids that have struggled early to hit the ball and came out tonight with some big hits. I think though it was more the defense that we were happy with tonight though.”

Veteran deputy, SRO Charlie Cook retires; replacement sought

    Adams County Sheriff Shane Rekeweg appeared before the Adams County Commissioners Monday to inform them of the retirement of School Resource Officer Charlie Cook and to ask permission to advertise for his replacement.
    Cook, who worked full-time as SRO at Adams Central Schools during the school year and also served as a road deputy during the summer, retired April 1. Rekeweg told councilors Cook’s replacement will not be a school resource officer but will be a road deputy full-time.

Lifetime achievement award

    Stan Mosser was the recipient of the Geneva Chamber of Commerce’s Lifetime Achievement Award, presented Tuesday evening during the chamber’s annual recognition banquet. Mosser served 17 years on the Adams County Memorial Hospital Board, 16 of those as its chairman, and has also been active in the community and with the chamber and served as president of the Geneva Public Library Board for 10 years.
