Trash disposal rate hike to hit Berne, Decatur hardest

Increases in the cost of disposing trash — approved Monday morning by the Adams County Solid Waste Management District’s board of directors — will have the most dramatic  effect on the cities of Decatur and Berne.
    Following a public hearing which attracted no comments, the solid waste board on Monday approved the first hike in county refuse disposal fees in five years. The new rates will take effect Jan. 1, 2015.

    BERNE— The South Adams Starfires came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and gave fans all the action they wanted and more, but were ousted by 1A power Blackhawk Christian in four very close games, 27-25, 25-17, 25-23, 30-28.
    The first set saw the Starfires pounce on the opposing Braves, who were without their head coach Lindsey Roth, who gave birth to her first child on Sunday. A kill from sophomore Caralie Farlow gave the Starfires an early 4-1 lead and had the opposing Braves looking flustered.

    John A. Kintz, 79, Decatur, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital. John was born in Decatur Sept. 5, 1935, to the late John and Mary (Bernard) Kintz. He married Elizabeth “Sis” Miller Oct. 18, 1958; she survives.
    A 1953 graduate of Decatur Catholic High School, John served in the U.S. Army from 1955-57. He worked at Central Soya before beginning his career in the insurance industry in 1966 at Franklin National Life. Later, John founded the Kintz Insurance Agency.

Eileen A. Billington

    Eileen A. Billington, 90, of Decatur and formerly of Bluffton, passed away at 1:05 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, at Markle Health & Rehabilitation.
    She was born in Huntington County April 30, 1924, to the late Raymond and Anna (Hause) Krieg. She married her first husband, Rev. James H. Hall, in Wabash Sept. 21, 1946; he passed away in 1991. Eileen married her second husband, Harold, in Bluffton June 7, 2001; he survives.

Bonita Heare

    Bonita “Bonnie” Heare, 80, of Decatur, formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away Saturday, Sept. 13, 2014, at Adams Woodcrest in Decatur. Bonnie was born in Berne, July 28, 1934, to the late Chester and Esther (Bollenbacher) Heare.
    She was a nurse in Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and in Arizona. She also was involved in various volunteer efforts.
    Bonnie is survived by one brother, John Heare of Stockton, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.

Wallace E. Hertel

    Wallace E. “Wally” Hertel, 91, Decatur, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, at Adams Woodcrest Retirement Community.
    Wally was born in Burlington, Wis., Friday, April 13, 1923, to the late Frederick W. and Anna (Schroeder) Hertel. He married Wanda M. Busse Dec. 13, 1947, in Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur; she survives.
    Wally served his country in the United States Navy during World War II, where he served in the Western Pacific.

Nolan Dean Koons

    Nolan Dean Koons, 76, Linn Grove, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014, in Fort Wayne.
    Survivors include his wife, Annette Nona (Gerber) Koons; three sons, James (Marsha) Koons of Ossian, Jeffrey (Sondra) Koons of Berne, Jason (Lisa) Koons of Huntington; two daughters, Jeralynn (Stanley) Reiber of Minneola, Fla. and Jolene (Mark) Letanosky of Avon Lake, Ohio; brother, Norman (Liz) Koons of Decatur; and 13 grandchildren.

Court document spells out allegations in rape, child molestation case

    Court documents filed in the case of Michael A. Motter — charged last week with single counts of rape and sexual battery and five counts of child molesting — allege the defendant engaged in unwanted sexual acts with two young girls in Berne.
