Jobless rate up, but among region’s lowest

    Adams County’s unemployment rate jumped up to 5.4 percent in January, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
    The county’s jobless rate in December was 5 percent. One year earlier the county sported an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent.
    Local jobless figures bottomed out during 2014 at 4.3 percent in September after hitting a yearly high of 6.0 percent in February. Jobless rates in the county peaked at 15.2 percent in July of 2010.

New DPD open for business, mostly

    It will still be a few days before the new Decatur Police Department facility has that “lived-in” look; before boxes on the floor are replaced by filled filing cabinets and before loose wires are tucked away from view.
    But, beginning today, the DPD’s new 7th Street home is open for business.

Falcon on display at Limberlost

    The Limberlost State Historic Site in Geneva will host a special presentation on the peregrine falcon by award-winning 15-year-old birder Alexandra Forsythe from 2-3 p.m. Sunday  at the site’s Visitor Center.
The peregrine falcon is the world’s fastest animal, with diving speeds reaching more than 200 mph or slightly faster than the race cars of the Indianapolis 500. Peregrine falcons are found throughout much of the world, including in many large urban areas where they hunt pigeons and nest on tall buildings.

Five county ballers land on ACAC lists

    Competing in their final ACAC basketball season, the Leo Lions were awarded three first-teamers and a second team entry on the all-conference lists.
    Boasting a 7-0 mark in the ACAC before moving on to the NHC in the 2015-16 season, the Lions placed seniors David Hardin and Adam Davison as well as junior Dylan Barrow on the first team with junior Kray Klopfenstein on the second team.

$50,000 approved for study of downtown

    “This is the next step we need in our city, and I am 100 percent in favor of it,” Decatur Mayor John Schultz said Tuesday night before city council unanimously approved spending up to $50,000 to have a “downtown plan” prepared.

‘Bench for Caps’ program comes to an end

    The Adams County Solid Waste Management District is ending its Bench for Caps program for now, Director Hank Mayer reported Monday. “The success of the program is such that we have too many pounds of caps for the orders we are receiving and we have no more room to store the caps,” Mayer said.

    The Adams County Republican Party, a group that includes every countywide office-holder and the overwhelming majority of elected municipal officials, gathered Monday evening at Adams Memorial Hospital for the party’s annual Lincoln Day dinner.
