    Parishioners at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Decatur found getting to Mass was a white and slippery affair Sunday morning. Snow began to fall in Decatur around 9 p.m. Saturday and continued throughout much of the day Sunday, dropping xxx inches of the white stuff on the first day of March.

    Decatur resident Blas Mendez celebrated his 90th birthday with a party in his honor Saturday night at the Decatur Knights of Columbus hall. A highlight of the evening was the presentation by Decatur Mayor John Schultz of the Key to the City. In his “From Left Field” column in today’s print and online editions of the Democrat, former managing editor Bob Shraluka takes a closer look at Mendez’ long and storied life. Also pictured is Blas’ newphew, Ike Mendez.
 

South Adams has highest graduation rate in county

    Indiana’s graduation rate for the 2013-14 school year jumped to 89.8 percent, up from 88.6 percent the year before, according to data released by the Indiana Department of Education earlier this week.
    Indiana’s non-waiver graduation rate also saw an increase. The non-waiver graduation rate was 83.4 percent, up from 81.7 percent in the previous year.

Separation of church, state talk draws crowd in Berne

    A crowd of more than 60 people attended a free seminar on the subject of the separation of church and state conducted by local attorney Cory Sprunger Thursday night at the First Mennonite Church in Berne. Sprunger opened the meeting by noting his program was for those who “have a passion for faith” as well as a “passion for public work.”

Jets bounce back with Parkway win

MONROE—Adams Central's 6'7 junior center Luke Voirol came off the bench Thursday night to give the Jets a solid double-double and paced the host team to a 43-34 decision over the Parkway Panthers.
Voirol didn't start the game for the 6-14 Jets but entered several minutes into the contest and immediately made his presence known. With the Jets trailing 8-2, Voirol scored three first period baskets, the last of which came on the third offensive rebound of an AC possession to bring them back to within one at 11-10.

No primary election necessary this year

    It’s official. There will be no May primary election in Adams County this year.
    Adams County Election Board members, meeting Wednesday afternoon in the basement of the county courthouse, turned to the Indiana Revised Code for direction and determined that — because no contested races are scheduled in any municipal primary contest — no primary is necessary.

Nursing home ratings slashed

    Arbitrary changes by federal regulators have created a severe blow to sterling ratings recorded a month ago by both Adams Heritage Nursing Home in Monroeville and Adams Woodcrest Nursing Home in Decatur it was announced Wednesday night by Bill Watson, director of long-term care at Adams Health Network, during the February meeting of the AHN Board of Trustees.

    With a few inches of snow still on the ground, high winds that blew into the area Tuesday created drifts along roadways and sidewalks. While the snowplows were out clearing the roadways, clearing sidewalks is left to area residents like Chester Smith, Monroe.
