Free Thanksgiving dinner from a community that cares

    A tradition continued in Geneva on Thanksgiving day.
And, judging by the enthusiasm in the voices of many of the two dozen or so volunteers on hand, the event’s future is in good hands.
The 31st annual free Thanksgiving meal was prepared and served or delivered to some 250 area residents Thursday, courtesy of the giving spirit of area merchants and individuals and selfless volunteers. The community event has taken place since 1983.

Health commish urges flu shots for Hoosiers

    INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The state health commissioner is urging Indiana residents to get flu shots, saying it helps prevent many from getting sick.  Dr. Jerome Adams says influenza is unpredictable, but it claims several thousand American lives every year.
    Influenza is a viral infection of the respiratory tract that is spread by respiratory droplets from close contact with infected people or contact with contaminated surfaces or objects.

Learning to plant corn

    Tracie Fuhrman and Kayden Hunter, students at Southeast Elementary, show how to plant a fish with corn seed. Students read poems and books about Thanksgiving and earlier this week followed a recipe for creating pudding cups. The students crumbled Oreos on top for dirt and planted their (candy) corn seed and added a (Swedish) fish for the fertilizer, just as the Indians taught the Pilgrims.

    Bernhard P. Kahlert, 87, Berne, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2014, at Adams Woodcrest. Bernhard was born in Jauer, Germany July 4, 1927, to the late Bernhard and Anna (Brier) Kahlert. He married Doris A. Nevil Dec. 28, 1991.
    Bernhard was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. He worked for M.W. Habegger Construction from 1954-1961 and Hardware Wholesalers from 1961-1981. He retired in 1981. He served during World War II in the German Army.

    Richard F. Thompson, 71, Geneva, passed away at 1:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2014, at Ossian Health & Rehab Center in Ossian. He was born in Fort Wayne Tuesday, April 27, 1943.

Food pantries step up to the plate

    Despite reportedly lower unemployment rates and rebounding economy, the number of people in need this holiday season is great, and compassion has moved many to help.
    Compassionate Ministries, 164 N Jefferson St. in Berne, is a poverty relief organization serving southern Adams County. Started in 1986, the organization has been led by Rev. Don Sauls for several years.

Free Thanksgiving dinners are a long-standing tradition in Geneva

    In 1983, Geneva Pizza King owners Ruth Brown and Connie Lunn came up with the idea of offering a free Thanksgiving meal to residents of Limberlost Apartments who didn’t have a place to go for the holiday to enjoy a good, hearty feast.
