‘Birthday Bash’ carnival slated Friday for young cancer patient

    A birthday bash and fundraising benefit will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the Bridge Community Church for Ebony Fawcett, a soon-to-be 9-year-old Decatur resident with sparkling eyes and an infectious smile who is battling cancer for the third time.

Hospital tax will take $2 million yearly from coffers

    Adams Memorial Hospital continues to show a balance in the black after four months of 2014, nearly twice what was budgeted, with $551,799 more in revenue being received than has been expended.

    Graduation ceremonies at South Adams High School will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Stardome.
  Honor students for the South Adams High School graduating class of 2014 are named after the second semester.  The honor students comprise the top 10 percent of the class.

  Valedictorian for the South Adams Class of 2014 is Erika Miller, the daughter of John and Kristina Miller. She finished her high school career with a grade point average of 4.07 on a 4.0-point scale.

Stephen L. Smith

    Stephen L. Smith, 63, Decatur, died at his residence Friday, May 23, 2014.
    Steve was born March 1, 1951, in Decatur, to the late Lewis L. and Esther M. (Swenson) Smith.    He married Patricia M. Lengerich Aug. 28, 1976; she survives.
    Steve was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Local 414 Teamsters Union, the Decatur Masonic Lodge 571 F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne and the Mizpah Shrine in Fort Wayne.

Sister Irene Kohne

    Sister Irene Kohne, CSA, (baptized Helen Kohne), 93, died peacefully May 27, 2014, at Nazareth Center in Fond du Lac, Wisc.
    Helen was born July 10, 1920, in Decatur, to the late Julius and Mary (Miller) Kohne. She was one of six children; four boys and two girls.

Judy M. Studebaker

    Judy M. Studebaker, 65, Berne, passed away Friday, May 23, 2014, at Genesis Healthcare in New Haven.
    She was born Feb. 9, 1949, in Decatur to the late Kenneth and Janice (Sprunger) Hoffman.
    She had worked as a secretary for the Adams County Health Department. Judy served on the Election Board in Adams County. She enjoyed baking and cross stitching and was an avid Cubs fan.

I&M land grab rankles resident

    Adams County resident Jon Fuhrmann appeared before the Adams County Commissioners Tuesday afternoon at their regularly scheduled weekly meeting to inform them of a potential eminent domain issue involving his property and I&M Power. 
    “I don’t know if there’s anything you can do with this, but I wanted to make you aware” of the situation, Fuhrmann commented in introducing himself and his concerns to commissioners.

Berne council again delays decision on sewer financing

    Another week, another discussion regarding an ongoing sewer project in the city of Berne.
    Clerk-Treasurer Gwen Maller told council Tuesday evening she received a call from Jeff Rowe, of H.J. Umbaugh & Associates in Mishawaka, requesting councilors make a decision regarding how to finance the project to allow him to proceed with the necessary paperwork.

     Arnold “Arnie” Ostermeyer, 93, Decatur, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014, at his residence. Arnie was born Friday, Oct. 22, 1920, in Wells County, the son of the late Martin and Sophie (Thieme) Ostermeyer.
    He married Evelyn Schroeder Jan. 18, 1942, at Zion Lutheran Church- Friedheim; she passed away Sept. 18, 2004.
