Eicher’s late points lift Lions past Central grapplers, 39-36

    In a battle of two of the top junior middle weight wrestlers in the Fort Wayne Semi-State area, Leo's Isaac Eicher charged in for a key third period takedown and made it stand up, handing AC's Hunter Bates his first loss of the season (2-0) and leading the visiting Lions to a 39-36 ACAC victory Thursday night at Central.
    Both the Lions, 6-0, and the Jets, 3-4, scored five falls, but all three decisions went the Lions' way in the key early-season showdown.

    Dawn E. Thomas, 49, Decatur, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2014.
    Among survivors are her two sons, Tyler Ellenberger of Ohio City, Ohio; and Ethan Ellenberger of Decatur; a daughter, Kayli Ellenberger of Portland;  companion, Paul Ray Marshall of Decatur; six sisters, Dianna (Duane) Ehlerding of Decatur; Donna (Larry) Bender of Convoy, Ohio; Doris Lautzenheiser of Decatur; Deborah (Doug) Schmit of Geneva; Lory (Garry) Wilson of Decatur; and Denise (Doug) Beahrs of Decatur; and granddaughter, Kinlee Ellenberger.

City plans 11th-hour pitch for 1st Street court site

    Although everyone acknowledged that it was like the old adage of beating one’s head against a brick wall, Decatur Mayor John Schultz said late in Tuesday night’s city council meeting he will meet individually with the three Adams County Commissioners in a last-ditch attempt to get them to locate a new superior court building on 1st Street at the site of the Schafer building.

    The annual Decatur Christmas tree-lighting evening  drew praise from Mayor John Schultz during Tuesday night’s Decatur City Council meeting. Schultz offered thanks to the Downtown Small Business Association for what he said was a “wonderful” ceremony on the courthouse lawn Sunday night.
 

Geneva council takes wait-and-see approach to Connect To Careers funding

    Just as she did last week before the Adams County Commissioners, Connect to Careers Board President Trois Hart appeared before the Geneva Town Council Tuesday evening to update officials on the status of the organization and to ask for their help in providing financing. Funds are needed to allow the non-profit  group to proceed in its mission of creating “opportunities for career advancement through a fully engaged and effectively prepared workforce,” Hart said.

    Mary Ellen Kortenber, 88, Decatur, returned to her heavenly Father Monday, Dec.1, 2014, at Woodcrest Nursing Center. She was born at the family home on John St. in Decatur Nov. 25, 1926, the eldest daughter of the late Joseph Franklin and Hazel Leora (Tumbleson) Kortenber.

Decatur to add ‘coordinator’ to oversee Stellar efforts

    It was assured at Tuesday’s city council meeting that Decatur is going to be hiring someone to become what is now being called a “community coordinator.” The final title could come in one of several forms — marketing director, vice mayor, economic development director — but it will in all likelihood be a full-time position.

    Hudson Conkling of Decatur was multi-taking Monday evening — working on some holiday crafts at the Decatur branch of the Adams Public Library while sucking on a candy cane at the same time.
