Excellence in Education — SA teacher Michael Baer recognized for Dots In Blue Water, Habitat work

    South Adams science and chemistry teacher Michael Baer has been chosen to receive an Excellence in Education award, sponsored by the national organization AdvanceED, South Adams High School Principal Trent Lehman reported at last week’s monthly school board meeting.

Commissioners allow county clerk to break hiring freeze

    Adams County Clerk of Courts Gayla Reinhart appeared before the Adams County Commissioners last week, seeking permission to break the county hiring freeze and create a part-time position within her department.
    Reinhart stated new federal regulations allow members of the public to view records kept by her department, requiring the redaction of all personal information contained in more than 2,800 cases on file with the clerk of courts office.

Steven S. Sprunger

September 12, 2014

    Steven S. Sprunger, 75, Berne passed away Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at Chalet Village.
    Survivors include three sons, Carl D. Sprunger of Pennville, Daniel J. Sprunger of Stuart, Fla. and Steven (Stephenie) Sprunger of Berne; sister, Jane Mann of Berne; and five grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Eads officiating. Burial will be in MRE Cemetery.
    Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Norwell @ Bellmont, football webcast

   Tonight the Braves put their 3-0 record on the line when they welcome cross-county rival Norwell to town for their home opener at Worthman Stadium. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. kick-off and the DDD pregame show is set to start around 6:45 p.m.

Sewer project exemptions determined

    The Adams County Regional Sewer District’s board of directors Thursday evening tentatively approved exemption requests from six property owners, allowing those homeowners to delay hooking into the county’s planned first-ever rural collection system. Ten similar exemption applications were rejected by the board.

AC board eyes alternatives to RISQ program

    Troubled students at Adams Central Schools may face a new method for out-of-school suspension next year after the board of education on Tuesday moved to look at a less expensive alternative to the RISQ program used by the school.

Guest 'reader' helps Southeast first graders

     Abbey, a 13-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, was a recent guest in the first-grade classroom of Linda Wellman at Southeast Elementary School in Decatur. A school spokesperson said the students enjoyed reading to Abbey while practice their reading skills. Thanks in part to Abbey, the spokesperson said, “the students are becoming ‘dog-gone’ great readers.” Pictured above with Abbey is first-grader Rogan Curry.

 

Squaws soccer blanks Blackhawk

    The soccer Squaws earned a 4-0 victory over non-conference Blackhawk Christian on Thursday night using a big home crowd to support the win.
    "It was nice to see a great crowd," noted BHS coach Steve Lee. "The boys and girls soccer games are normally scheduled on the same nights alternating home and away but this night was one of the rare occasions when the boys did not have an away game. The crowd was electrifying with chants and Vuvuzelas (soccer horns). I really appreciated the team support."
