Berne awards contract for sewer project

    With closing on the loan for the Berne waste water treatment plant upgrade just a few weeks away, Ben Adams of Commonwealth Engineering met with Berne City Council Monday evening to ask for approval to award R.E. Crosby, Inc. of Fort Wayne the contract for the project.
    Crosby submitted the low bid of $8.8 million during the June 23 council meeting, a figure that was much higher than the estimated $7.3 million to complete the project.

Byerly couple picked as 4-H parade honorees

    Wayne and Edith Byerly have been selected as the Grand Marshalls  for the 2014 Adams County 4-H Fair parade.
    The Byerlys have serviced the 4-H community in a variety of capacities. For the past 15 years, the couple have served as groundskeepers, mowing the fairgrounds and tending flowers that offer a burst of color for all visitors.

Filing window nears for school board candidates

    A brief window will open July 23 for individuals interested in serving on the North Adams, Adams Central or South Adams boards of education to file their petitions of candidacy. The filing deadline ends Aug. 17.
    Three seats are to be filled on each school board during the November general election.

From Berne to Bern and back

    A group of 39 county residents, primarily from the Berne area, recently took a 12-day trip to Switzerland where they toured various sites significant to the Anabaptists movement of 16th century Europe. The Amish, Hutterites and Mennonites are all direct descendants of the movement.

Iron Kid Triathlon brings record numbers

     Crossing the finish line is always a tremendous accomplishment, and is celebrated as such, during the annual Iron Kid Triathalon hosted by the Decatur-Adams County Parks and Rec Department. Lawson Deathe, 6, gets the hero’s welcome in the photo at left. Event officials said turnout for the triathalon was the largest in the event’s history.

    Bill Forehand, Sun City, Ariz., died May 31, 2014.
    He was married to Evelyn Bollinger-Forehand, former Decatur resident; she survives in Sun City.

David L. Paddock

July 15, 2014

    David L. Paddock, 55, Decatur, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, in Houston, Texas.
    He was born March 29, 1959, to the late Louis (Jim) Paddock and Joyce (Drake) Paddock.
    David was a long time truck driver. A few of his employers include Werner Enterprises, Martins in Fort Wayne and Raun in Decatur. He had his own business, Dave Pilot Car, where he escorted long and wide loads.
  His children and his long-time companion, Leslie, were all at his side when he passed.

Pay hike for Berne council approved after long debate

    Berne city employees and elected officials will receive a pay raise following a lengthy discussion and split vote during Monday evening’s meeting of Berne City Council.
    Mayor Bill McKean proposed a 1 percent plus $500 raise for all city employees during the June 22 council meeting, and a $250 increase for elected officials. While council easily and unanimously passed the pay bump for all city employees, the decision regarding the raise for elected officials garnered much more attention ... and debate.

Missing Decatur teens are found in rural Georgia

    Four Decatur teenagers reported missing since Saturday were apprehended late Monday night in Cook County, Ga. One of the teens is facing unspecified felony charges and all four are currently in custody at the Cook County jail.
