Paul A. Phillips

    Paul A. Phillips, 44, Decatur, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital. Paul was born in Huntington May 14, 1970, to the late Thomas E. and Carol A. (Craig) Phillips. He married Susan A. Bentz June 2, 2001; she survives.
    Paul attended The Bridge Community Church. He was employed at McDonald’s in Decatur.

Court decision urgency expressed

    A two-hour work session by the Adams County Commissioners Monday morning with a representative of the architectural firm of Schenkel/Schultz and the contractor Construction Control Inc. proved helpful in clarifying location options for a new superior court building as well as reducing the overall cost of the new county jail.
    Schenkel/Schultz Principal Dave Sholl presented three options for where to locate the superior court structure, noting the “floor plans remain relatively the same no matter what site we put it on.”

Swan Lake

    Two of a wedge of a half dozen swans take flight after being spooked by the photographer Monday afternoon along the Adams-Jay County Line, near the Limberlost Swamp Wetlands Preserve. A flock of sandhill cranes was also reported to be in that area Monday but eluded the photographer’s lens.

Feeling crafty

   Morgan Huss of Decatur was among the youngsters who gathered for crafts, and a visit with Santa, at the Adams Public Library in Decatur Monday evening.


Kelly, Concordia too much for small-ball Squaws, 61-25

    With 7:02 left in the second quarter, Bellmont's Amanda Hunter hit a short jumper that put the Squaws ahead of Concordia 10-9.
    That was the only lead of the game for the Squaws who over the course of the next 16 or so minutes of play allowed Concordia to outscore them 35-2 with the Cadets' size and defense taking the Squaws quicckly out of the game and sending the visitors back home with a non-conference 61-25 triumph.

Nominees sought by chamber

    The Decatur Chamber of Commerce annually recognizes one outstanding individual and two superb businesses with its organization awards.
    According to a chamber press release, The Stephen Decatur award is given to an individual who has gone above and beyond ordinary service to the community. The recipient of this award is someone that the community can look to for leadership and guidance. The award is named for naval hero Stephen Decatur, the namesake of the city.

    The holiday spirit was evident in downtown Decatur early Sunday evening as residents came out under rainy skies for the annual Christmas-tree lighting ceremony. Above, a crowd congregates around the lighted tree on the courthouse square.
