Carnegie friends kick off drive to preserve structure

    The Friends of the Carnegie Library group has no predetermined agenda, save its over-riding goal of preserving what has been described as Adams County’s second most historic building.
    The group has no fixed plan for the future use of the building — which since 1979 has served as the site of the Adams County Superior Court — and currently has little money to put toward its efforts to save the structure.

Cyber safety: Talk at BHS draws a crowd of just one

    “If I help just one parent, it’s worth it.”
    Those words, spoken by North Adams Community Schools Library Coordinator Michelle Houser, turned prophetic as only one area resident attended the cyber safety seminar held at the Erekson Theatre Wednesday evening.
    Undaunted, Houser talked of ways parents can help keep children — and themselves — safe online. Houser stressed personal and customer privacy, and how those issues may contradict one another.

Deadline for registration to vote near

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana residents are being reminding that Monday is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 4 general election.
Secretary of State Connie Lawson also is asking the families of military and overseas voters to connect their loved ones with an absentee ballot request. People may register by visiting Voters who mail their registration must have it postmarked by Monday.
     Residents may begin voting by in-person absentee ballot on Tuesday.

    Roger Bentz, 93, Berne, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at Lutheran Life Villages, Fort Wayne.
    He was born March 10, 1921, in Adams County to the late Charles and Cora Yake Bentz. He married the late E. Jane Liechty on Dec. 17, 1943.

Barry Kent Ellis

    Barry Kent Ellis, 71, Fort Wayne, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at home surrounded by family. He was born on Sept. 18, 1943, in Paulding, Ohio.
    Barry grew up in Decatur, where he fell in love with his wife, RuthAnn Soliday. He was a member of Sonrise United Methodist Church. Barry was passionate about the Eagle Marsh Preserve and owned his own financial planning and accounting company.
  He loved to fish and was an avid stamp collector.

City, county brace for road salt price jumps salt

    The potential for a major increase in the cost of road salt was discussed by Adams County Highway Engineer Tim Barkey, Decatur Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert and the Adams County Commissioners at the weekly commissioners’ meeting Monday afternoon.
    Responding to a question from Commissioner Kim Fruechte, Barkey indicated he had not yet purchased road salt for the highway department for this winter, but anticipated doing so in the very near future.

Kmart close-out sales under way

Kmart’s parent company — Sears Holding — announced last week the Decatur store, and the last remaining Kmart in Fort Wayne, would close later this year.  The closing will leave some 50 employees out of work.
