Decatur Legion post opening its doors to public for limited ocassions

     American Legion Post 43 in Decatur will open its doors to the public for a series of upcoming events, beginning at 5 p.m.  Friday with an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner at the post, located at the corner of Madison and 1st streets.
    According to Deb Lambert, a volunteer who is active in fundraising events for the post, the Legion “is working on holding more events that will be open to the public” in an attempt to generate more traffic at the post and to increase accessibility to the service organization.

Dora J. Beery

    Dora J. Beery 92, Decatur, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, at Ossian Health and Rehabilitation.
    She was born March 16, 1922, in Portland to the late Walter and Berniece (Burger) Wilkinson.
    Due to the death of her parents at an early age, Dora and her three siblings were raised at Mooseheart Home for Children.
    She married Donald W. Beery July 5, 1946; he passed away Jan. 8, 2013.
  Dora was a homemaker and a member of the Moose Lodge 1311 in Decatur.

Dahlia C. Wilferling

    Dahlia C. Wilferling, 88, Decatur, passed away at 7:50 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2014, at Adams Woodcrest Nursing Center, where she had resided since April 2013.
    She was born Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of the late Paul and Francis (Bork) Sonntag. She married the late Carl H. Wilferling Nov. 19, 1949, in Chicago; he passed away June 1972.
    Dahlia was a homemaker.

Michael E. Sommer

    Michael (Mike) Sommer, 63, Yorktown, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. 
    He was born June 16, 1951, in Adams County to the late Rufus Sommer and Martha (Zimmerman) Sommer. He married Pam Lambert Nov. 20, 1977; she survives.
    Mike was a 1969 graduate of Adams Central High School and graduated from Ball State University with a degree in landscape architecture. 

Newly-named Decatur police chief, assistant issued oaths

    Two members of the Decatur Police Department were issued oaths of office Tuesday in recognition of their new positions within the department. Deputy Police Chief Greg Cook and Detective Lieutenant Mike Mahan have been promoted to chief and assistant chief, respectively, in a move precipitated by the pending retirement of long-time city police chief Ken Ketzler.

Fire truck purchase is ok’d in Berne

    Mayor Bill McKean called it an “exciting time.”
    “This is not something we do every day,” the mayor said shortly before members of the Berne City Council authorized the purchase of a new fire truck for the community.

Monroe Trophy tops Miller's

    In Junior League play at Don Ray Memorial Park, Monroe Trophy won the season finale against Miller's Land Surveying last week, while Manley Meats lost an exciting opening tourney game against Miller's over the weekend as well.
    Lilly Kintz pitched a gem for Trophy going six innings and allowing just one run on four hits with 10 K's and three walks for the win, while Kaitlyn Hawkins also went the distance for Miller's allowing seven runs on five hits with nine K's and two free passes in a loss.

    Dora J. Beery, 92, Decatur, died Monday.
    Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton at Hirschy Funeral Home.
