County attorney fires back at local jail site criticism

    Following the appearance of Vinnie’s Bar owner Chris Faurote last week before the Adams County Council to announce his displeasure with the proposed location of a new judicial center on 1st Street, Adams County Attorney Mark Burry offered a response on the part of the Adams County Commissioners at their regular weekly meeting Monday afternoon.

Business is booming at Smith Bros

    Business is booming for Smith Brothers of Berne, and controller Dave Burson went before city council Monday to request an approval of the annual tax abatement form CF-1 that states the company is in compliance with the terms of the abatement originally filed in 2005.

    Tonight's county-rivalry contest on the softball field between the Lady Jets and Squaws will begin roughly at 5 p.m. The DDD pre-game show will tentatively start at 4:45 p.m. and fans are encouraged to follow the link below to the game cast website. Lucy N. Filips

    Lucy N. (Baker) Filips, 91, Orlando, Fla., Formerly of Decatur, passed away April 11, 2014, at her daughter’s residence in Orlando.
    Lucy was born Thursday, July 6, 1922,  in Adams County to the late Fred E. and Amelia R. (Kohne) Baker.
    She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and was an active volunteer at church. Lucy was employed and volunteered at Adams Memorial Hospital for many years.

Kae L. Sprunger

    Kae Linnet Sprunger, 76, Berne, died Friday, April 11, 2014, at Swiss Village.
    She was born to Vincent and Miriam (Yeoman) Sprunger Sept. 11, 1937, in Adams County.
    Surviving are Jon Garth Sprunger of Leonidas, Mich.; Michael (Carolyn) Sprunger of Linn Grove; Alice Coblentz of Berne; Eric (Jean) Sprunger of Berne; Rebecca Sprunger of New York; and Jared (Jerri Hoffman) Sprunger of Fort Wayne.

A graduate not pictured was Anthony Tappy, Alexin. Skill-Link is a Northeast Indiana Works collaborative initiative that provides certification-based training of incumbent workers to elevate their skills.

Good Friday as makeup school day?

  North Adams Community Schools will not hold classes in observance of Good Friday this year, but in future years the day could be used as a make-up day if another severe winter forces the cancellation of an excessive number of school days.
    Members of the North Adams school board expressed varying opinions at last week’s board meeting about Good Friday being a school-observed holiday. Many board members, as well as residents in attendance, were in favor of using the holiday as a make-up day.

SAFE carnival

Ethan Tumbleson enjoyed his cotton candy at the Serving All Families Everyday — or SAFE —  carnival Saturday at Riverside Center. The event drew a large crowd of youngsters who were treated to carnival games, prizes, cotton candy and popcorn.

Braves fare best at Coaches Vs. Cancer Classic

    BERNE— South Adams High School had their first opportunity to host the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic in its third year of existence on Saturday in what turned out to be one of the nicest days of the early spring season albeit blustery.
    The Starfires did not fare as well as the weather, however, going 0-2 against Adams Central and Bellmont in the opening and closing games. Bellmont was a winner over the Jets in the middle game. All proceeds from the concession stands as well as entrance fees were donated for cancer research.

    Tonight the Squaws host the Garrett Railroaders for their home opener on the softball diamond (weather permitting). The game is slated for a 5 p.m. start tonight with the DDD pre-game show set for a 4:45 start.
