Squaws dominate at Franklin; SA’s McIntire shines in mile

    INDIANAPOLIS—The Bellmont Squaws served notice to other teams from across Indiana Friday evening they intend to be a force to be reckoned with at the IHSAA state finals in July as they won two of the three events staged at the invitation-only Franklin Central Flashes Showcase.
    The Squaws won both relay events on the night breezing to victory in the 4 x 800 relay with a time of 9:28.16 (winning by over 12.5 seconds) and then posted a 2.51 second triumph in the 4 x 400 relay with a 4:03.23 finish.

Noble W. Comment

    Noble William "Bill" Comment, 73, Monroeville, passed away at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 15, 2014, in the Parkview Regional Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.
    He was born Thursday, May 16, 1940, in Adams County, the son of the late Noble "Cobe" and Cecil (Burkhead) Comment Sr. 
    Bill married Lucille F. Sorg August 12, 1961, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hessen Cassel; she survives.

Alfred Conrad

    Alfred Conrad, 79, Decatur, died this morning at his residence.
    Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.

William S. Schwartz

    William S. Schwartz, 46, Geneva, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born March 23, 1968, in Jay County, to the late Daniel I. Schwartz and Lizzie W. (Schmucker) Schwartz.
    He married Maryann U. Schwartz June 5 1986; she survives.
    William was an Old Order Amish and was self-employed as a carpenter.

Verna Sprunger

    Verna Sprunger, 89, Berne passed away Thursday evening, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.

2% pay hike for county employeees is approved

    Almost as an afterthought, the Adams County Council last week approved a wage increase of 2 percent for all county employees in the 2015 budget.

Bikes and booms: It must be summer in Decatur

    Snow was on the ground in Decatur on Tuesday morning, but that night’s city council meeting featured a wealth of talk about summer activities: the Sculpture Walk Festival, the annual Fourth of July fireworks display, and, once again, a major motorcycle event.
    The ABATE (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) of Indiana group will be back for what was formerly its Mayors Ride, now titled The Motorcycle Experience, on Sunday, June 1.

Braves’ bats destroy Blackford in home opener, 22-1

    Bellmont played its first four games away from home but Thursday night lit up the Teepee with a shellacking of Blackford, 22-1 in five innings.
    The Bruins' lone run came in the top of the first after Mason Shinabery struck out the first two batters of the game. With two outs, starting pitcher Chandler Piercy stroked a double off the fence in left, then was hit in by Scott Dodd for the 1-0 lead.

    Tonight's make-up contest between the Blackford Bruins and the Bellmont Braves is set to begin at 5 p.m. but may be later due to the lateness of some schools in the extended school day period. The DDD pre-game is slated to begin at approximately 4:45 p.m. (gametime pending).
