Baby it’s cold outside

    Indiana is closed. Well, not really, but pretty close. With temperatures predicted to hit their lowest mark of the year today, all schools in northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio are closed, as are several businesses, churches, food banks, libraries and county buildings in the surrounding area.
    At press time, Decatur city offices and Adams County offices remain open, as do most local businesses.

Shrine Circus met by protesters

    The Mizpah Shrine Circus performed during the recent weekend at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, drawing in huge crowds — and a few protesters.
    A dozen or so protesters stood outside the main entrance to the coliseum before Saturday’s 2 p.m. show. Members of the group held signs that voiced their animal activist opinions and thoughts on the treatment of animals used in the circus performance.

Peggy Bowman, 69, formerly of Geneva, died Friday. Arrangements are pending at the Downing and Glancy Funeral Home.

Dale R. Bruns

January 27, 2014

    Dale R. Bruns, 34, St. Henry, Ohio, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, near Montezuma, Ohio.
    He was born Feb. 19, 1979, in Coldwater, Ohio, to Jeff and Mary Jo (Buening) Bruns; they survive in St. Henry.
    He married Meghann (Kunk) April 29, 2000; she survives.

Frances L. Schwartz

    Frances L. Schwartz, 79, Berne, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at her home surrounded by family.
    She was born Dec. 3, 1934, in Adams County to the late Albert J. Coblentz and Frances Eicher. She married the late Joe H. Schwartz April 4, 1955.
    Frances was a homemaker and a member of the First Missionary Church. A favorite past time of hers was connecting on Facebook with family and many friends. She enjoyed reading her Bible and cherished her family, grand and great-grandchildren.

Rev. Harry R. Reiners

    Rev. Harry R. Reiners, 91, Berne, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Swiss Village, where he was a resident.
    He was born in St. Paul, Minn., June 18, 1922, to Raymond and Audrey (Jauss) Reiners in St. Paul, Minn. He married the late Elizabeth "Beth" Oesau June 1, 1949.

Michael P. Rapp

    Michael P. Rapp 61, Decatur, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
    He was born in Springfield, Ohio, Oct. 15, 1952, to the late Clarence and Phyllis (Pollock) Rapp. He married Carla J. Smitley Aug. 17, 1978; she survives.
    Mike attended Grace Fellowship Church and was a member of the American Legion Post 43. Mike was employed at E.P.C. in Geneva. He served his country in the United States Army.

Sister Irene Lengerich, CSA

    Sister Irene Lengerich, CSA, formerly, Sister Mary Theodore, died peacefully Jan. 24, 2014, at St. Francis Home in Fond du Lac, Wis.
    Irene was born June 30, 1917, in Decatur, to the late Theodore and Josephine Bentz Lengerich. Irene had three brothers and seven sisters, two of whom were also Sisters of St. Agnes.

Dwight L. Hirschy

    Dwight L. Hirschy, 76, Decatur, passed away Jan. 25, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born July 28, 1937, to the late Amos and Rosalene (Marsh) Hirschy. He married Doris Coon Aug. 1, 1959; she survives.
