Frigid morning

The time and temperature reading at the First Bank of Berne branch office on the east side of Decatur showed a generous reading of zero degrees F. early this morning. City officials reported an overnight low of -6 degrees.

Adams County welcomes first 2014 baby

January 3, 2014

Haley Davidson, Linn Grove, gave birth to Adams County’s first baby of the New Year. Her son, Jackson, was born at 1:49 a.m. Jan. 1 at Adams Memorial Hospital. The baby, Davidson’s second, weighed in at 7 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 inches long. Also pictured is Jackson’s father, Shawn Bowman, as he holds a gift basket full of goodies that traditionally goes to the first baby of the year.

Central, SAdams prepare for team state at Westfield

    "We're strong enough to win it, and there are a couple of other teams that are equally as good if not better. It comes down to bonus points," sized up Adams Central wrestling coach Doug Schultz, on the chances that his squad successfully defends its Class A state wrestling championship Saturday at Westfield High School.

Adams County under travel advisory

    Adams County is currently under a travel advisory until further notice. Roads may be snow covered in spots with drifting snow due to the wind. Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and take extra precaution.

2014 says hello

    Following a brief reprieve from Mother Nature, temperatures in the area plummeted into the teens over the past few days, bringing 3 inches of fresh snow along for the ride.
    Jeremy Gilbert, operations manager for the city of Decatur, at 8 a.m. today said the intensity of the snowfall “has really picked up in the last two or three hours” leaving everything in town “pretty well snow-covered.”

Geneva hires school resource officer

    The Geneva Town Council conducted a brief end-of-the- year meeting Monday evening to swear in a new school resource officer, appoint new terms and individuals to various positions within the town’s government, and adjust year-end budget appropriations.

Decatur library provides activities during holiday break

    Elizabeth "Pat" Gass, 79, of Decatur, died Tuesday at Lutheran Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home.

Vivian F. Sprunger

January 2, 2014

    Vivian F. Sprunger, 90, Berne, died Dec. 30, 2013, at Swiss Village.
    She is survived by two daughters, Myrna (Ladd) Wheeler of Crofton, Md. and Betty Sprunger of Peru; two sons, Ted (Jan) Sprunger of Fort Wayne and Bob (Sara) Sprunger; and a sister, Marjorie DeArmond of Berne.
    Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Swiss Village Chapel with Pastor Max Haines officiating.
     Burial is in the M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne.
