Water main break closes all restaurants

    All restaurants are now closed for the day due to the possibility of contaminated water. This order was given by the Health Department.

Record setting arctic blast

    After battling unusually heavy snowfall levels for the better part of three days and experiencing what are believed to be record-setting overnight temperatures, some relief is in sight for Adams County residents.

Ethel Louise Guether Ley

Ethel Louise Guether Ley went home to be with The Lord on Friday, January 3, 2014.  She was born on July 20, 1921 to Walter and Rose Guether in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. She married Rev. Harold Ley on October 27, 1944 in Kohler, Wisconsin.  Together they served churches in Chicago, IL; Louisville, KY; Plymouth, WI; Bethlehem, PA and Evansville, Indianapolis, and Magley, IN until his death in 1982. At that time, she moved to Bluffton, IN.

Lavon J. Wulliman

    Lavon J. Wulliman, 93, Berne passed away January 3, 2014 at Swiss Village. She was born to Wilbur and Della (Neuenschwander) Lehman on December 18, 1921 in Adams County. She married Charles Wulliman on February 4, 1941.
    She was a member of the First Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday School, taught vacation Bible School, member of the Ladies sextet, member of the Mennonite Choral society, and sang in the annual Messiah for over 50 years. She also worked at the Berne    Casual Ladies Shop.

DDD trying to get papers out

   The Daily Democrat attempted to publish a newspaper Monday, that attempt was halted by the intense storm. Ron Storey, Publisher of the Decatur Daily Democrat stated, "we will do everything we can to get customers their papers, the rural areas will be tough. Conditions permitting, both Monday and Tuesday's papers will be delivered today."

Decatur without water

In addition to battling the snow and frigid temperatures, crews from the City of Decatur this morning were working on what City Operations Manager Jeremy Gilbert termed a “major water main break” on the south edge of the city, just behind Don Ray’s Drive-Away business. The leak was first reported around 11 p.m. Monday, according to one source.
Gilbert is asking city residents to conserve as much was as possible
over the next 24 hours and said some residents will experience
low water pressure and, in some cases, rusty water.

Storm paralyzes county

    A major winter storm brought Adams County and most of Indiana to its knees, dumping more than 9 inches of snow on the region throughout the day Sunday. High winds and temperatures which fell to near-record lows kept most residents at home Monday.
    The Adams County Sheriff’s Department issued a Level Red travel advisory Sunday afternoon, limiting travel to emergency responders and law enforcement officers only.
