Morning raid leaves several facing drug charges

May 22, 2013

    A large group of police officers, armed with warrants, picked up several people in Adams County on drug-related charges this morning.
    The officers met around 5 a.m. at the Adams County Jail for a meeting, then began looking for suspects and making arrests.
    Names of those arrested were being processed this morning and will be released later, likely today, by the sheriff's department.

Sculpture Tour 2013 schedule unveiled

    Decatur Sculpture Tour officials have announced that the second-year event will  launch with day-long activities, including a new event, a film competition, which integrates sculptures from the tour.
    The tour will be held on Saturday, June 8. Sculptures on the tour now total 16 created from artists locally and around the country. The sculptures will be on display until May of 2014.

Bellmont breaks five records, advance to state track

    FORT WAYNE—The Bellmont girls track team qualified athletes for the IHSAA state finals track meet in eight events Tuesday night and established five new school records en route to a huge second place team finish in the regional meet at Northrop High School.
    "Good performances all around the board," exclaimed a pumped-up coach Carl Risch, as he analyzed the work his team put forth at the regional.

Fire hits Ohio home

Judith L. Doctor

    Judith L. Doctor, 68, of Fort Wayne, passed away at 5 a.m. on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, following an 11-year battle with cancer.
    Judy was born on Thursday, August 10, 1944, in Decatur, to the late Edward L. Selking and Esther (Remenschneider) Selking, who survives.
    She married DeWayne Doctor on April 27, 1968, in St. John Lutheran Church-Bingen; he survives.

Melissa V. Lunn

    Melissa V. Lunn, 51, Pennville, died Friday at her home.
    Among survivors are her mother, Barbara, and stepfather, James Sprunger, of Bishopville, S.C.;a  son, Michael S. Lunn of Columbus, Ohio; and daughter, Crystal M. Lunn of Fort Wayne
    Visitation is from 3-8 p.m. today and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home.Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in MRE Cemetery.

Trash disposal fees stay same

    The Adams County Solid Waste Management District will not increase fees for the disposal of trash through 2014 and possibly beyond.
    Tim Baker, attorney for the solid waste district, reported during a Monday meeting of the district's board of trustees that the district "has a very healthy cash balance" which will allow it to keep rates at their current levels for individual customers as well as for municipalities.

Vets groups plan joint Memorial Day service

    A joint Adams County Memorial Day observance will be hosted by the Decatur American Legion Post 43 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6236, along with the Berne American Legion Post 468 and Geneva VFW Post 6751 on May 27.
    The program will begin at the Decatur Catholic Cemetery at 8:30 a.m., where a short memorial service will be held, followed by a second service at the Decatur Cemetery.

Food handler’s class scheduled here

    Parkview Regional Medical Center and the Adams County Health Department are teaming up to offer a two-day ServSafe food handler’s certification class on June 26-27 at Bellmont Middle School.
    The class will meet from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
    The cost of the course, established by the Indiana Restaurant Association, is $150. People wishing to recertify by taking just the course examination may do so on the second day for a $50 fee.

Late blast ends Lady Stars’ season at Eastside, 6-5

    BUTLER—A two-run homerun in the top of the sixth inning proved to be the final straw against South Adams as the Lady Stars' season ended in a dramatic 6-5 loss at the hands of the host Eastside in sectional play.
    After a single with one out by Ellie Parker, the Blazers' lead-off batter, Kerrisa Lockwood, belted a two-run blast to give Eastside their final lead.

   Three perfect brackets made up the top three this week for Pigskin Picks week 16....
