‘He needed it more’

   "I just thought he needed it more now than I did," said Andrea Braun Irwin after she became a major sidebar story on Sunday to one of the most popular victories in the history of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
    Seemingly always followed by a black cat at the Speedway, popular Tony Kanaan ended 11 years of frustration by winning the 500 on his 12th try. And when it was over, amid waves of jubiliation, he displayed in Victory Lane two medals, one of them given to him by Andrea Irwin.

Memorial Day cold one in Adams County

    Memorial Day was a wet one in Adams County, but just cold and damp as Memorial Day services were held at the Veterans Memorial at the Berne American Legion post.
    A joint observance was held by the Decatur American Legion Post 43 and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 6236, Berne American Legion Post 468 and Geneva VFW Post 6751.
    Featured speaker was Guy Gruters, an F-100 fighter pilot, small business owner and corporate executive vice-president.

Busy weekend for firefighters

    Memorial Day weekend proved busy for Decatur firefighters, who were dispatched four times between Saturday and Monday, with one of those incidents resulting in the apprehension of three juveniles.
    On Saturday, firefighters were sent at 3:11 a.m. to the scene of an accident at 3682E US 224, where a vehicle driven by Darrell D. Hoverman had left the right side of the road and struck a drainage culvert, according to a spokesperson for the department.

Waldo Conrad

    Waldo Conrad, 87, of Decatur, passed away at 8:25 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
    Waldo was born Friday, January 8, 1926, in Adams County, to the late Martin and Frieda (Bauermeister) Conrad.
    He married Aldine Meyer, on June 5, 1948, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church-Ossian; she passed away on November 20, 1979.
    He married Doris (Buuck) Walther, on February 24, 1990, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church-Fort Wayne; she survives.

    Lois J. Franz, 87, of Decatur, died Saturday at Woodcrest Nursing Home.
    Arrangements are pending at Zwick and Jahn Funeral Home.

Virginia L. Braun

    Virginia L. “Ginny” Braun, 83, of Decatur, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, May 22, 2013.
    Ginny was born February 14, 1930, in Monroeville, to the late Frank and Frances (Vizard) Cagnet.
    On November 4, 1950, she married Eugene A. Braun; he survives in Decatur.

Larry A. Toole

    Larry A. Toole, 47, passed away May 22, 2013, at his residence in Chestertown, Md.,
    Larry graduated from Bellmont HIgh School in 1983. He served seven years in the Army.
    Among survivors are his parents, Gerald (Jerry) and Mary Jo Toole of Decatur; companion, Georgia Picard of Chestertown, Md.; brother, Gary (Diana) Toole of Bellville, Mich.; sister, Lori (Mark) Einfalt of Pflugerville, Texas; and four nieces and nephews, Riley, Kelsey, and Connor Einfalt, and Roland Toole.

Velma S. Zelt

    Velma S. Zelt, 98, of Fort Wayne, formerly of rural Decatur, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home.
    Velma was born on August 22, 1914, in New Haven to the late John D. and Julia L. (Bradtmiller) Hemsoth.
    On May 22, 1937, she married Alfred H. Zelt; he tragically died on November 17, 1952.

Norwell survives sectional scare from Braves, 9-2

    The state's third-ranked Norwell Knights had a battle on their hands Thursday night for the first six innings in the class 3A baseball sectional at Bellmont as they led by just a 3-2 count over the Braves in the opening round of tourney play.
    However, in the top of the seventh, the Knights, now 27-3 on the year, showed the merit of their ranking battering Bellmont pitching for six runs on five hits and two walks and advanced to the next round with a 9-2 decision over Bellmont.

Tonight the Bellmont Braves host county-rival Adams Central on the hardwood in a post-Christmas...
