Bunge worker reportedly suffered separated should in Friday silo fall

    Several attempts to reach Bunge North America officials before the Daily Democrat's publishing deadline this morning were unsuccessful, but unofficial reports said the main injured in a fall in a silo on Friday was Ben Ellenberger of Decatur.
    Apparently, Ellenberger's only serious injury was a separated shoulder.
    According to reports, Ellenberger was struck by something which knocked him off balance and into the silo where he fell an estimated 12 to 15 feet.

City man hot for new idea: campfire 2 go

    A local businessman is campaigning to get a revolutionary new product off the ground.
    Neil Schroeder, owner of Andy's Car Wash, is convinced that Campfire 2 Go could be the next big thing.
    At Neil's Thanksgiving get-together in 2011, his brother, Don, placed his Campfire 2 Go prototype on the ground, lit it, and asked his brother, "What do you think?" Neil replied, "What do I think? I think we need to start a business for it, like ... yesterday!"

Lady Jets softball officially moved to 3A by IHSAA

    INDIANAPOLIS (IHSAA)-During its final meeting of the 2012-13 school year, the IHSAA Executive Committee approved the sectional reassignment of several baseball and softball teams and also ruled on coaches proposals in the sports of gymnastics and wrestling.

Fall inside silo sends Bunge employee to hospital

    A probable fall inside one of the tall silos at Bunge North America on Decatur's north side sent a flurry of rescuers from the Decatur Fire Department, police department and paramedic units to the scene, not knowing what they would find upon arrival.
    Bunge Safety Manager Gary Teeple said the bottom of the enormous structures are not flat but cylindrical in shape, making maneuverability difficult at times for workers.

    Arrangements are pending at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, Berne.

Lehman says gay marriage ruling weakens foundation

    State Rep. Matt Lehman said Thursday has was "disappointed" in a pair of  U.S. Supreme Court rulings announced one day earlier that struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act and invalidated a California law banning same-sex marriage.

Hospital bottom line ever blacker

    Thanks to a continuing effort to reduce expenses, the Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH) financial sheet presented to the Adams Health Network (AHN) Board of Trustees Wednesday night shows a solid bottom line for the year with the network having an $814,570 surplus.
    When the 2013 budget was adopted last year, it was anticipated a surplus of just under $130,000 would be on the books at this time but budgeted expenses for the year have been significantly down.

Bellmont grad finds a summer niche

    A 2007 Bellmont High School graduate, Alicia Drier, has found a good way to spend her summer. She's co-directing Romeo and Juliet with Shakespeare From The Heart, an acting company that presents plays to raise funds for local charities.
    The group has been a nonprofit organization in Fort Wayne for about 10 years, performing a summer show and a winter show each year with volunteers in the community.

Half inch of rain here

    A huge black cloud moved over Decatur a little after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and while it was ominous looking, there was no storm beyond a few bolts of lightning and some thunder.
    Officials at the city weather station recorded .53 of an inch of rain. It was the fourth consecutive day that rain has been recorded here.
    A high of 86 degrees followed Tuesday's high of 90 in Decatur.

Poe native takes hospital post

    The Adams Health Network (AHN) will welcome a Poe native who has a strong background in working with physicians and their practices to become its new Director of Physician and Provider Services effective July 29, it was announced at Wednesday night's meeting of the AHN Board of Trustees.
